Fill the Shelves Challenge sees huge response

- MediaNews Group

PHOENIXVILLE » The 2020 Fill the Shelves Challenge was an overwhelming success due to generous contributors and many volunteers.

What started out with one person’s vision has become an annual event. In August 2016 in the heat of the summer looking toward cooler weather, a thought popped up.

What do people in need do during the winter to put food on the table when food pantry shelves are running low and often bare?

In August through December it was asked that folks put aside several cans or other non-perishables to be divided by two local food pantries in January of the following year.

This year the items were shared by Phoenixville Women’s Outreach – The House and Project Outreach Spring-Ford.

Over the four years the contributions have grown.

This year brings the total to nine agencies that shared in the bounties. Contributors were allotted two drop-off places — Barto Pool & Spa and The DeMutis Group — both in Phoenixville.

The challenge was put out via Facebook and personal contacts. There is no other sponsorship other then contributors and volunteers. It was coordinated to show Bette Banjack’s concern for all the people in the area — no matter their circumstances.
