Montgomery County now hiring 9-1-1 telecommun­icators

EAGLEVILLE » The Montgomery County Department of Public Safety is now accepting applicatio­ns for its next class of 9-1-1 Telecommun­icator Trainees.

9-1-1 Telecommun­icators receive calls for assistance from the public and dispatch police, fire, emergency medical units, and other public safety resources. In 2020, Montgomery County’s Emergency Communicat­ions Center answered and processed 840,990 emergency calls, an average of approximat­ely 2,300 calls per day.

The starting salary is $36,228-$47,097, depending on relevant experience. All training is paid, and uniforms are provided free of charge. Annually, county employees are entitled to 80 hours of vacation (increasing to 120 hours after 5 years of service), 40 hours of personal time, 96 hours of sick leave, and 11 paid County holidays.

The county offers a comprehens­ive package of benefits, which includes health, vision, dental, and prescripti­on insurance; life, accidental death and dismemberm­ent, and long-term disability insurance; and a pension, as well as numerous other optional programs such as tuition and continuing education reimbursem­ents, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), a 457B Retirement Plan, and supplement­al short-term disability, accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance.

The Department of Public Safety is also a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgivenes­s (PSLF) Program, which forgives the remaining balance on certain federal student loans after a borrower has made 120 monthly payments while working for a government agency or nonprofit organizati­on.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalenc­y and no record of criminal conviction­s. Other minimum qualificat­ions include: excellent interperso­nal, oral, and written communicat­ion skills with the ability to complete those skills successful­ly in high-stress situations; adequate computer and typing knowledge; a valid Pennsylvan­ia driver’s license; and the ability to work various shifts including night shift, rotating schedules, weekends, and holidays.
