Penn Medicine physician joins local nonprofit organization as medical director
Community Volunteers in Medicine, a community-based health organization providing free, high-quality healthcare to uninsured working people in the Chester County region, appointed Janet Jacapraro, M.D., as its new medical director, beginning January 2022.
Dr. Jacapraro, a boardcertified Internist, was most recently a primary care physician at Penn Medicine Exton. Dr. Jacapraro succeeds longtime medical director Dr. Mary Wirshup, who retired in 2021.
“Dr. Jacapraro is uniquely qualified for this role,” said Maureen Tomoschuk, president and CEO of Community Volunteers in Medicine. “She previously served as Medical Director for two different community-based health organizations in Baltimore and has been volunteering at CVIM since 2021 after moving to the area in 2019. Her knowledge, compassion and understanding of the rich diversity of Chester County will be huge assets to best serve the needs of our community.”
Dr. Jacapraro earned her M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed her residency at Johns Hopkins
Hospital.
“I was drawn to medicine because I’ve always been interested in people’s stories. Knowing a patient’s story helps inform their care,” said Dr. Jacapraro.
Prior to her time as a primary care physician at Penn Medicine Exton, Dr. Jacapraro was a physician at Johns Hopkins and an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
“The most rewarding experiences in my career have been while working with underserved populations,” said Dr. Jacapraro. This includes time spent at Indian Health Service in Tuba City, Arizona, as well as work with Health
Care for the Homeless and Shepherd’s Clinic in Baltimore, Maryland.
“I’m so excited to be joining this team, where there’s a clinic that’s a model of patient-centered medical care that identifies and addresses social determinants of health to provide the very highest standard of care,” said Dr. Jacapraro. “I really think the future of medicine is already happening at CVIM.”
