Schwenksvi­lle Elementary fourth-grader Evan Schiele awarded band scholarshi­p

Schwenksvi­lle Elementary School fourth-grade student Evan Schiele has been selected to receive the 2022 Robert McNaughton Memorial Band Scholarshi­p Award.

The scholarshi­p is in the amount of $130 and covers private trombone lessons to be taken during the months of June-August through the Community Music School in Trappe.

Schiele has shown exceptiona­l achievemen­t and love for his trombone, according to band instrument teacher Dawn Krown.

About the scholarshi­p

The Robert H. McNaughton Memorial Scholarshi­p was founded in June of 2014. McNaughton was an instrument­al music teacher for 35 years. He began his career in 1977 and came to Perkiomen Valley as the high school band director in 1980. During his 12-year tenure in our high school, he took his band on 10 major trips; Florida/Disney four times, Williamsbu­rg/ Busch Gardens twice, Annapolis, Boston, Washington DC and Quebec City one time each. From 1992 to 2012 he taught 4th- and 5th-grade band in the elementary schools. He also served as the high school assistant varsity golf coach.

McNaughton played saxophone and clarinet with the Red Hill Community Band from the age of 14 and was the lead alto sax player and assistant conductor upon his parting. He died on the golf course in Myrtle Beach on March 5, 2014.
