Steel River Playhouse presents musical comedy ‘Nunsense A-Men!’

In a twist, all the characters are portrayed by men

POTTSTOWN >> The nuns have returned to Steel River

Playhouse, 245 E. High St., but this time with a twist. In “Nunsense A-Men!” all the characters are portrayed by men.

“Nunsense A-men!” is basically

the original “Nunsense” show with all the characters being portrayed by male musical-comedy performers.

First performed in Brazil as Novicas Rebeldes, this version of “Nunsense” premiered in New York in 1998. Receiving rave reviews and standing ovations subsequent productions have boasted such stars as “Laugh-In’s” Arte Johnson as Mother Superior and Olympic Champion Greg Louganis as Sister Robert Anne. A whole

new layer of comedy surfaces with lines like “The guys in the old neighborhood still can’t believe I became a nun!” To quote the New York Times: “a change of habit, boy, oh, boy!”

The book music and lyrics are by Dan Goggin. Stage direction and choreography is by Amanda Morrell, interim artistic director of the Steel River Playhouse. John Williams is the music director.

“Nunsense A-Men! is a riot of a good time,” Morrell said in the release. “From start to finish, you will be laughing at the crazy antics of the Little Sisters of Hoboken as they put on a show to raise money to bury some of their fellow sisters who died due to an unfortunate soup accident and are currently being stored in the freezer.”

“Sure to entertain you, the cast is filled with some familiar faces, but you’ve never seen them like this before, in a habit that is,” she continued. “I am so excited to share our show and make our audiences laugh because we could all use a little more laughter in our lives and in the world.”

“Nunsense A-Men!” will run from April 12 to 28. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, 2 p.m. on Saturdays April 20 and 27, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

The April 20 performance at 2 p.m. will be a relaxed performance. Individuals with ADD, ADHD, Dementia, Autism, sensory sensitivities — or any patron who would enjoy a performance where they can freely express themselves — are invited to this performance.
