First United Church of Christ

An added bonus of all the rain is seeing a rainbow, or even a double rainbow! We share photos and pause to enjoy the sight. For Christians the rainbow is the sign of the covenant which God gave to Noah and promised not to destroy the earth by flood. It is an affirmation of God’s love for all humanity.

Yet somehow rainbows displayed in or on churches doesn’t always receive quite the same response. During June rainbow items and flags are everywhere to celebrate diversity, and can be overwhelming. Yet as people of God we cannot risk living the message of inclusion – banner or no banner. At First United Church of Christ we love as God loves, all are welcomed and affirmed, as you were created by God.

This month it is 62 years since the United Church of Christ was formed by the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church with the Congregational Church. Our history reaches back to the Puritans, our doctrines remain rooted in Scripture. As a denomination we have discussed and disagreed and discerned and evolved. Being united does not mean same- each church is autonomous as we listen to one another to live in community. It is not always easy- this Sunday sermon is “Listening to Voice of Wisdom” taken from Proverbs 8.
