Previews of mid-week games

- BY RON HARAMIA SPORTS WRITER

There are just three weeks left in the high school girls basketball regular season, the boys are now past the halfway mark and the Bi-county Tournament is on the horizon.

Basketball fans won’t have to wait long this week for some highly competitive games with a full slate tonight. Here are capsule previews for some of the top boys and girls games Tuesday through Thursday.

Tues. tangles Laporte @ Plymouth (girls)

The Lady Pilgrims (9-7, 2-2 NLC) have won their last two games in dominating fashion, but will be tested tonight at home by sectional foe Laporte (115). The Lady Slicers have won five of their last six games, the loss being an overtime defeat to Lake Central last Saturday night. Nyla Asad is LP’S top scorer at 17.8 ppg with Ryin Ott close behind at 15.9. Claire Tanner (14.7) and Alaina Clady (10.0) lead the Lady Pilgrims in that category.

#6 Oregon-davis @ Glenn (girls)

This is a Bi-county preview, with this one at TCU Gym in Walkerton whereas next week it will be in Hamlet. The two contests with the Lady Bobcats (12-3) are the last non-conference tussles scheduled for Glenn (7-10, 4-6 NIC) the rest of the way. O-D is ranked No. 6 in Class 1A this week after two one-sided wins by the combined score of 162-77 in its last two outings. O-D junior Mercedes Rhodes leads the area in scoring at 27.5 ppg.

Bremen @ Elkhart Christian (boys)

The Lions (3-6, 0-4 NIC) go out of conference for the second consecutive game with a trip to Elkhart to face ECA (3-6). Bremen defeated Bethany Christian last Saturday with three players - Trevor Devine, Reece Willis, Tony Hardin - scoring in double figures. The Eagles have gone to overtime in their last two games, defeating Trinity in two OTS and losing to FW Canterbury in a single extra session last Friday.

Argos @ Whitko (boys)

The 5-5 Dragons have now alternated between a win and loss the last seven games and would love to break that string with a victory over the Wildcats (3-5) tonight. Argos’ last two losses have been by just four points, then one in a double overtime setback. In their most recent outing though, the Dragons won by 21. Whitko is new to the schedule this year.

Winamac @ Triton (girls)

The Lady Trojans (7-10, 2-2 HNAC) will try to snap a two-game losing streak when they host the Lady Warriors (11-7, 3-1 HNAC) in a Hoosier North Athletic Conference contest tonight. Winamac has won just one of its last five games, but three of those losses were to 4A schools and the other was to 10th-ranked Class 3A Knox. Kendal Johnson leads the Warriors in scoring (12.3 ppg).

Laville @ #6 North Judson (girls)

After a narrow defeat in its last outing, Laville (1-15, 0-4 HNAC) heads to HNAC heavyweight, No. 6 (Class 2A) North Judson (14-2, 2-0 HNAC) for its next contest. The Lady Bluejays have won their last nine games and are led by one of the area’s top scorers in Lillian Frasure (24.1 ppg).

Wed. watches Frontier @ Culver (girls)

The Lady Cavaliers (7-8) go out of conference for a rare Wednesday nighter against fellow Class 1A school Frontier. The Falcons (6-10 before a Tuesday night game with North Newton) are currently in third place in the sixteam Midwest Conference. Culver has won its last two games against 1A competition and are led in scoring by Alex Temme (11.6 ppg). Sophomore Emma Blissett is Frontier’s top scorer at 10 ppg. The Lady Cavs won last year’s meeting, 39-21.

Thurs. thrillers Oregon-davis @ Argos (girls)

This varsity only contest (7 p.m. tip-off) could be a sectional final preview. O-D and Argos (10-6) currently have the best records of the six teams in Sectional 50. This is the second of three games this week for the Lady Bobcats. The Lady Dragons have won three out of their last four and were excited to see Macy Morris (knee) back on the court - although still limited - in their 26-point win over Lakeland Christian last Saturday night.

Glenn @ Penn (boys)

Glenn (8-2, 3-2 NIC), winners of four in a row and five of its last six, may be playing its best basketball of the season. The Falcons will see how much they have improved when they travel to Penn (4-5,

2-1 NIC) in one of the top Northern Indiana Conference games of the night. Derek Durda (19.9 ppg) and Carter Hickey (14 ppg) lead the Kingsmen offense that scores almost 66 per contest. Carter Yung (12.3) leads Glenn in scoring, but Robby Porter, Khori Barker and freshman Brycen Hannah are also capable scorers.

CGA @ New Prairie (girls)

The Lady Eagles (2-10) take the court for the first time in 28 days when they travel to New Carlisle to face the Lady Cougars (3-12) of the Northern Indiana Conference. CGA won last year’s meeting by two points.
