- By Jamie Fleury Staff Writer

MARSHALL COUNTY — The first annual Elks Care - Elks Share “Ride to Give Back” was a success according to organizer P.J. Martin.

a total of 56 bikes participated in the ride with five stops that included the Bourbon american Legion Post 424, Elks Lodge in Rochester, Leiter’s Ford Tavern, Knox Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 748, and the Plymouth VFW Post 1162.

Proceeds were to benefit Plymouth VFW Post 1162 and Plymouth american Legion Post 27.

The event was sponsored by Plymouth Elks Lodge 2548, Oliver Ford, Town and Country Printing - The Complete Printer, Berger Farm and Welding, and the Disabled american Veterans auxiliary Chapter 42.

Martin said that the goal of the fundraiser was to purchase United States Veteran grave markers to replace those that are worn down. Martin volunteers every year to replace the flags for Memorial Day. He said 2,400 to 2,500 flags are replaced every year to honor those who served. “That number is going to go up,

not down. Honoring our veterans is important.”

Martin expressed his gratitude to the Marshall County Police Department, the Bourbon Police Department, and the Knox Police Department for supervising the route and protecting the riders.

Martin said the goal was to raise $5,000. He

is confident with a few more donations pending that they will reach their goal. He said he would donate the rest if that is what it takes.

Those who weren’t able to attend the event but would still like to donate to the cause may send checks payable to Plymouth VFW Post 1162 and mail them to Plymouth VFW Post 1162, 606 Lake avenue, Plymouth, Ind., 46563.
