Local youth group collects food for Caring Cupboards
MARSHALL COUNTY — Doyle Peacock, with the help of his youth group, collected enough food to fill the “Caring Cupboard” food pantry located outside of the Plymouth Fire Department. They not only filled the cupboard, they collected another full box and are collecting food through the end of September.
On a Sunday afternoon in late august, Peacock expressed having a heavy heart for those in need. Instead of focusing on what he could not do, he focused on what he could do to make a difference.
Peacock went to a local grocery store and purchased ravioli, Beefaroni ® and a box of cereal. He placed the items inside the “Caring Cupboard” and told his mother, “I want to see that box full.”
Knowing he couldn’t do it alone, he approached his youth group at Parkside Community Church in argos for help. With the help and encouragement of Youth Group Leader David Trump and Parkside Community Church Pastor Brian Trump, the church donated more than two boxes of food to the youth group’s food drive.
Caring Cupboards organizer Rebecca Palmer was thankful for the contribution. “It’s Hunger
Action Month and this is perfect. Maybe more people will jump in because of his example.”
The Caring Cupboards initiative touched Peacock’s heart because it was available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Knowing a single mother founded the organization for those who struggle to make ends meet and who’s work schedule does not always allow for visits to the local pantries during regular hours inspired him to choose that outreach for this collection.
Anyone interested in donating to the local Caring Cupboards Pantry, please reach out to Palmer directly through her social media Facebook page @ Caring Cupboards for Jason.
Palmer monitors the pantry daily to make sure it is never empty. Items most needed at this time are canned pasta such as Ravioli and Beefaroni ®, Ramen Noodles and anything that can be eaten without much preparation.
Palmer said that not everyone has access to kitchen accommodations to prepare noodles, beans or rice. She noted that for people who essentially homeless or who are staying at the hotels, it is even more challenging to prepare food for themselves and their families. Toilet paper, dog food, cat food, and hygiene products are also appreciated for those in need.
