Mrs. Doris J. Layman, 89, of Plymouth was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 8:35 p.m. on Feb. 18, at her home. This followed a decline in her health over the past month.

On May 23, 1931, Doris June Waldron was born in Goshen. She was the treasured daughter of Ira and Elizabeth Butler Waldron. Her family moved to the Plymouth area and she graduated with the Plymouth High School class of 1949.

In Bremen, Doris married the love of her life, Mr. Jack E. Layman on Oct. 29, 1950. This followed a love at first sight whirlwind four-month courtship. Jack had farmed and using the proceeds from the soybean crop, purchased a new 1952 Chevrolet. The newlyweds traveled to Indianapolis to the Governor’s mansion and enjoyed dinner wth Governor Henry F. Schricker and the first lady of Indiana, Maude. Jack and Henry were cousins.

The following day, he and Doris packed up to travel on US 6 for a brief honeymoon, continuing their trip to California where they resided for a year while Jack was involved with advanced specialty training with the US Army. Upon completion of his classes Jack reported for duty at Stuttgart, Germany. Doris returned home to Indiana with family.

The devoted union of Jack and Doris spanned nearly seven decades allowing them to experience many life adventures. Their union produced two wonderful children Linda and Rick. The blessings of two grandchildren Krista and Mike have been added to the family tree.

With a stong work ethic, Doris was employed at Lauers Men’s Clothing Store in the bookkeeping department for 17 years. She later worked as a pharmacy tech in the Prople’s Drug Store. Doris and Jack delivered the Pilot News and South Bend Tribune to Marshall County residents for 44 years. With rare level of energy and a strong constitution, Doris persevered on the route till near the end of 2020.

With a green thumb, Doris was accomplished with gardening. She and Jack teamed up to annually plant flowers around their home to add colorful accents to the landscape. She especially loved roses and with a watchful eye cared for them adding new varities eachyear. A vegetable truck patch garden was a prominent part of her plans. The dominant plants included multiple rows of green beans and at least 18 tomato plants. The bountiful harvest was canned and frozen for winter’s use and shared with family and special friends. Doris savored the garage sale scene. There was nothing better than snagging the buy of the day locating many special treasures.

A dynamic team, Jack and Doris loved adventure and travel. They enjoyed many trips over the years, but in more recent years traveled with family members. Their 25th anniversary was celebrated in Hawaii visiting all the islands. A return trip to California, flying to New York City to take a limo, carriage and subway ride. They saw Times Square, the Empire State Building, dined at the Deli Roxi and watched the Broadway Production “Oklahoma.” There was a cruise to Cozumel with a Jeep ride and pontooning. She embraced and cherished every moment making memories of a lifetime.

Left to cherish the memories of Doris are a daughter, Linda Everdon and husband Jim of Plymouth, her son, Rick Layman and wife Margo of Rochester, two grandchildren, Krista Leanne Everdon and Michael Christopher Layman both of Plymouth, and the Caribbean blue parakeet Sweet Pea, her beautiful avian companion.

Preceding Doris in death are her parents Ira and Elizabeth Waldron and beloved husband Jack on March 6, 2019.

Graveside services for Mrs. Doris J. Layman will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 22, at the Chapel of the New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth. Pastor Chuck Krieg will officiate. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Good Family Funeral Home of Rochester.
