Johnson & Johnson vaccination efforts on pause
MARSHALL COUNTY — Johnson & Johnson vaccine efforts were paused this week to enable the Food and Drug administration (FDA) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) to determine if there is a link between the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and a clotting issue that has been reported by several individuals.
Marshall County Public Health Nurse Lisa Letsinger confirmed the pause but had no additional information until the State Department of Health issued their press release. Nurse Letsinger referred to a report released from the NY Times that six recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine reported a “rare disorder involving blood clots within about two weeks of vaccination.”
That report indicated that all six individuals were female aging in range from 18 to 48. One woman has died with a second woman hospitalized in critical condition.
The CDC reported that approximately 7 million people in the United States have received the vaccine. Though the adverse reaction seems to be rare; federal agencies have paused vaccinations using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine out of an abundance of caution for safety review.
Nurse Letsinger recommended going to https://www.webmd.com/dvt/blood-clotsymptoms to review signs and symptoms of blood clots for those with concerns.
Nurse Letsinger stated at the time of inquiry Tuesday, “Right now, we don’t have any further information until the FDA and CDC make their recommendation.” She confirmed she will be sharing the press release from the State Department of Health when it is made available.
