Marshall County unemployment rises slightly for second month
County Unemployment Rates March 2021 - Non Seasonally Adjusted
Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.9 percent for March, and the national rate is 6.0 percent. The monthly unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force.
Indiana’s labor force had a net decrease of 5,895 over the previous month. This was a result of a decrease of 3,644 unemployed residents and a decrease of 2,251 employed residents.
Indiana’s total labor force, which includes both Hoosiers employed and those seeking employment, stands at 3.34 million, and the state’s 63.1 percent labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 61.5 percent.

The unemployment rate for Marshall County has been rising for the past two months. According to a report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the rate for the month of March was at four percent.
That marks an increase of a tenth of a percent for two consecutive months with about 400 fewer Marshall County residents working than at this same time last year.
Starke County has a rate of 5.5, the highest of neighboring counties. Elkhart County was the lowest at 3.5 percent. Indiana’s non-seasonally adjusted rate remained at 4.7 percent, while the U.S. dropped to 6.2 percent.

Employment by Sector
Private sector employment has decreased by 84,600 over the year and decreased by 100 over the previous month. The monthly decrease is primarily due to losses in the Professional and Business Services (-3,700) and the Trade, Transportation and Utilities (-3,000) sectors. Losses were offset by gains in the Construction (3,300) and the Leisure and Hospitality (3,100) sectors. Total private employment stands at 2,626,200, which is 114,300 below the new December 2019 peak.
