National Day of Prayer Breakfast held Thursday

- BY JAMES MASTER ASSISTANT EDITOR

In 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill into law that stated that the President of the United States was to set aside an appropriate day each year, other than Sunday, as a National Day of Prayer. It was about 30 years later when the first National Day of Prayer was observed. It was organized by the National Prayer Committee and featured speakers Vice President George Bush and Lloyd Ogilvie.

On Thursday morning, community members gathered at Christo’s Banquet Center for the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast to observe National Day of Prayer.

“This is awesome. We didn’t get to do this last year so this means a lot to me. It should mean a lot to all of us,” said Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter. “It seems like I say this every year, but we need prayer in our lives now more than ever. For starters, let’s thank God that 2020 is behind us and look to a promising future for our city, Marshall County, State of Indiana, and all across our world.”

The Pledge of

Allegiance was performed by Boy Scout Troops 251 and 257. Then, Linda Starr sang the National Anthem.

Pastor Darek Morris from Plymouth Community Church gave the invocation. Pastor Morris read from Ephesians 3:14-21, “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith— that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

The guest speaker for the morning was Pastor Justin Chambers from New Song Church. He commented on the theme of this year’s Day of Prayer which was “Lord pour out your love, life, and liberty.”

“We (New Song Church) have built our ministry upon those same principles. Our entire vision is built on those same principles. And I really think every church is,” said Chambers.

He went on to speak about four things that God has wanted since His creation. “This is what God wants from all of us… he wants people to know Him, He wants them to find freedom, He wants them to discover their purpose, and to make a difference.”

Linda Starr returned to lead the room in singing “God Bless America.”

Pastor Brandon Richey, Grace Community Christian Church, gave the benediction.
