Joy and Prayer

Reflection on Philippians 4:2-9

- BY DENNIS WENZEL Dennis Wenzel is Spiritual Support Director at Catherine Kasper Home in Donaldson.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Jesus Christ.” Philippians 4:6&7

One of the conditions that we all face in daily life, is that people worry a great deal. We receive a new job or a different opportunity in life; then we worry if we are doing a good job. No one in the office says anything to us and we worry if anyone appreciates the efforts we expend on the job. Our pay checks are handed out and the worry starts, will it be a check for the pay period or a pink slip. Worry seems to be on the hearts and minds of lots of people; we ask why? Is it that we don’t believe in our own abilities? Do we need the approval of others all the time? Do we trust in ourselves or just when someone says something good about us? If you find yourself asking questions like these, there is an end to all this worry and doubt; it is putting your trust in God more then other people.

The next time a situation causes you worry, do the following: First take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Clear your mind of the task you are working, visualizing the moment of worry leaving your body. In your mind, lift up your problem in prayer, asking God to help you see the right direction to take; seeing clearly what the next action you should take. When you put your trust in God’s ability to lead you, joy will fill your heart.

This feeling of joy could be felt as a trickle or a flooding experience; this how you know that God has heard your prayer. Many people visualize Jesus taking on the burden with them, walking every step of the way. When you feel a sense of peace in your life, in the midst the problem at hand, you will feel that everything has been taken care of with you by God who loves you.

Dealing with problems that confront you in this way, will give you a sense of peace. When others around offer their solutions that don’t feel right for you, just thank them for their concern. No one else may understand the peace and joy you feel, but they don’t have too; because the Lord is working especially with you and no one else. As each day with the problems and worries that come your way, just seek the comfort of knowing that God is waiting for you to bring him into your concerns through prayer and the feeling of peace he has for you.

Dear Lord, I will have to admit I worry more then I should. When situations come to my attention that I would worry about, bring me into an attitude of prayer. Let me feel the joy you have for me and peace you desire to give. Amen..
