Sharing Life’s Lessons

- BY JAN HOUIN

The past two weekends have been very peaceful. after a two-week vacation, then weekend trips to Illinois and bloomington with a class reunion thrown in, we have enjoyed a little time at home. Even though we don’t have set schedules during the week, we try to take a break from our volunteer and home projects on the weekend.

Today is Monday and how does a day fill up so fast! I always say I work best under pressure, and I would get nothing done without a deadline. Well, almost a year ago I volunteered to work on decorations for my class reunion and now with two weeks to go, it’s crunch time and suddenly there are lots of ideas with not much time to get them done!

I took a break from my volunteer work for Operation: Quiet comfort in July and now it’s time to start getting ready for our Holiday Project and I want to pack and ship more boxes this week before the new postage rates go into effect.

Mary Kay Seminar was virtual last week. I didn’t block out time to watch it live and now I have until September 21st to view it. Thankfully I can do it in smaller increments than the three days that were live, but I need to make time to view it! I’m putting together a Mary Kay order for one of my customers. The eye shadow she’s used in the past has been discontinued (because make-up styles change as often as clothing styles) so I’m trying to see what new shades are closest to her favorites. change is good, it’s just not always easy.

Toastmasters will be at the Plymouth Farmers Market on Saturday September 11th to give people an overview of what this organization has to offer. We’ll be handing out fun little goodie bags to anyone who stops by to say Hi. Thankfully I purchased the items several weeks ago for the bags – unusual for this procrastinator! but then I remembered that I volunteered to bring a guest to one of our august meetings and realized that this Friday is the last meeting in august. Would anyone PLEASE like to be my guest Friday morning at 6:45 a.m.? You can come in person or via zoom. Please call me for details 574-936-1424.

I bought apples and peaches at Farmers Market last Saturday with the intention of making cobbler and pie. They are waiting for me on the kitchen counter. Kenny has been eating the peaches and I guess that’s healthier than cobbler anyway, but I don’t want any of them to go to waste.

I should clean my house, but I really like the motto that “dust is a protective coating for furniture”, so until I know company is coming, I guess that can wait a little longer.

Of course, I also need to finish this column. It is in the Thursday Pilot News but I like to submit it on Monday so it is finished, and I can cross it off my list.

Is it just me, or do others have things like this spinning around in their heads? It’s time to take control. For me that means writing things on a “To Do” list, then prioritizing those things. Take it one step at a time. Then there’s nothing more motivating for me than to cross off projects on the list as I get them done.

From a peaceful weekend to a week that has plenty to do. If you’re a young working person looking forward to retirement with nothing to do, think again. I’ve heard many retired people say that they don’t know how they ever had time to work.
