WALKERTON - After waiting over 30 years to start 2-0, Glenn’s football team has the chance to do so for the second consecutive year after opening with a resounding 46-0 win over Boone Grove to start the 2021 campaign.

“There’s no recipe like winning. Any kind of problems you have don’t seem to matter as much (when you win),” said Glenn head coach Austin Foust in an interview with WTCA radio. “It’s a huge confidence booster. We wanted to come out right from the get-go. We were one block away from (scoring) on the opening kickoff return, then the next play Nathan Creed throws a 57-yard pass to Dom Jolley and we’re up 7-0 after maybe 10 seconds. You can’t start much better than that. The defense gets a three-andout and we score again so within the first two minutes of the game we are up 14-0. We cruised from there. We think we have a pretty good defense and (the first teamers) gave up just one first down (on a penalty) and no total yards. You can’t be more dominating than that. On special teams, we blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone so all three phases of the game we had production. We played well, but we have a ways to go.”

Creed finished with three TDS passing (on five completions) and another pair running the football.

This week the Falcons host South Bend Riley in the Northern Indiana Conference opener for both teams. The Wildcats were thumped at Michigan City, 62-0, last Friday night. This will be the second of five straight road games to start the season for Riley.

“We’ll be challenged this week,” Foust said of the Wildcats. “Our goal is to win the NIC South and we need to beat Riley to do that. They have a good receiver/wing back named James Boyd, who’s 6-2 and athletic. Then their quarterback, Eli Taylor, is scary. Not only can he throw, but he can run it too. We have to make sure we are disciplined and keep everything east and west, not north and south. They are big up front on defense. They like to cause havoc. We are coming off a big win and they are coming off a big loss, but our kids have to understand that doesn’t mean anything. We need to play with effort and compete every play. We know adversity is going to come. We need to be able to handle it. If we can, we’ll set ourselves up. We need to be ready at the opening kickoff.”

That kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
