Rhythm on ‘O’ important for Culver

- By Rusty Nixon Sports Editor

CULVER - Rebounding from an opening night loss to North Judson is the task for Culver this week against South Central, but a stiff defense has the Cavaliers feeling at least upbeat.

“We talked last week about what we needed to do to win the football game and one thing was eliminating the big plays and I think their first play went for 55 yards and a touchdown,” said Culver head coach Mike Zehner. “But after that we really held them in check. It was 12-0 headed to the fourth quarter and even the second touchdown was set up by our kids blocking downfield on a punt and they couldn’t hear the call to get away from the ball. It hit one of our kids in the back and they recovered inside the 15.

“We put them (the defense) in tough positions at times but I feel like our defense got turnovers when we needed it, turnovers on downs when we needed it, a couple of goal-line stands. I was very happy with our defense.”

South Central took a similar tough loss to Triton.

“They’re coming off a two-point loss to a really good Triton team and I’m sure that’s one that they would like to have back,” said Zehner. “They have some talent. They have a talented quarterback and their guys up front do a really good job too. They are going to spread us out and try to throw it down the field. That’s one thing that I thought we did really well last week - pass coverage and getting to the quarterback - and we have to continue to do that if we are going to win this football game.”

Dealing with the South Central defense will be on the agenda, but what the Cavs will see is uncertain.

“With our offense, we get different looks every week,” said Zehner. “We try to throw everything at our offense during the week to get them ready for what they are going to see. We have to eliminate those big plays. We have to get into a rhythm and continue to move the ball and put points on the board. We have to win that turnover battle. Three is the magic number in my mind. We want to be plus-three in that category which usually indicates a win.”
