Another road challenge for Trojans

- By Rusty nixon Sports editor

BOURBON - A week ago Triton’s Trojans played very well in a road win at Culver.

“That’s been a good rivalry game for us over the years,” said Triton coach Rodney Younis. “Culver did a great job offensively possession-wise. They ground and pound you. It was difficult for us to get them off the field. We were able to capitalize on a couple of turnovers in the third quarter and that was the difference in the ball game.”

Seeing quarterback Cole Shively throw for three scores last week is also a needed component as the Trojans come down the stretch.

“I felt like Cole played a complete game,” said Younis. “Not just on offense but defensively as well. I think he stepped up and became a very good leader. He was able to distribute the ball well and when we called his number he made some very good throws. We feel we have some kids who can do some good things for us and we wanted to get them involved so it isn’t just Anthony (Schuh). It was a good game for us to see kids step up and do a good job.”

Their reward this week is to hit the road again to play a revived Pioneer team that has scored 88 points and allowed just 24 in the past two weeks. Not that the whole year hasn’t been a challenge.

“This is one of those years that every week is a battle,” said Younis. “We have to play our A-game to be in a position to have a chance to win every week.”

A slow, Covid-induced start for the Panthers has turned into another juggernaut performance.

“They graduate kids and just seem to load up with other good players,” said Younis. “This year is no different. We are excited for the competition and a chance to see what we can do. They do a really good job of utilizing their athletes. They may tweak that Wing T to take advantage of that and this year is the same. They are still going to be Pioneer and you’re still going to see some misdirection. They are going to try to utilize their speed. We have to read our keys and be disciplined and try to set the edge so they can’t get outside of us.”

For Triton, it’s a week to continue pushing the fundamentals of being the best they can be.

“We need to continue to focus on cleaning up our technique of blocking with our young line, with footwork and being in the right position,” said Younis. “That and taking care of the football. We can’t give them extra possessions.”
