Commissioners updated on Clocktower Renovation project

MARSHALL COUNTY — During Monday’s meeting of the County Commissioners, Jerry Hazeltine, Midwest Maintenance project foreman, provided an update on the County Clocktower Renovation project.

“As far as where we stand, all the exterior columns, decorative scroll work, all that has been removed,” Hazeltine said. “Basically, we’re down to smooth sides. all the siding is still there until our roofers get done. They’re on site now putting in the two new water

tables. Once they’re installed, the carpenters will begin again.”

Once the carpenters install new siding, Hazeltine says that the decorative items can be installed. Once the siding is back on, they’ll move up to the eyebrows of the clocks. When that happens, the clock themselves will be removed on all four sides. Then the new roofing and siding on the eyebrows will be installed.

“And once we have that completed, our painters will come back, get everything caulked up and repainted and start tearing this thing down,” said Hazeltine.

Commissioner Mike Burroughs asked about the weight of the clocks. Hazeltine said that they were cast iron. “They’re probably going to weigh quite a bit, but they have to come out in order to get that siding, that new wood up.”

They’ll be using a crane to remove them.

Hazeltine said that, as of Monday, the work schedule is good. “When we get to those columns, it might be a little different.”

Commissioner Kevin Overmyer informed Hazeltine that former commissioner and historian, Kurt Garner, is scheduling the 150th anniversary of the courthouse on Saturday, June 11 at 11 a.m.

“We shouldn’t be in your way,” Hazeltine said.

Hazeltine added that he has touched base with the Marshall County Historical Society and has been able to give them some items from the old clocktower for display.
