- By James master Managing Editor

Since 2009, Jennifer Hutchison has worked at the Plymouth branch of the United States Postal Service (USPS) helping to deliver mail to those in and around the City of Plymouth. However, working for the post office wasn’t always the destination.

Born and raised in argos, Jennifer graduated from argos High School in 2002. She went on to Ball State University for an associate’s Degree in Paralegal. Prior to her career in the USPS, Jennifer worked as a paralegal for Stevens, travis, Fortin and Lukenbill. after 12 years of working as a paralegal, Jennifer decided to change jobs. She didn’t have to travel far because her new career was just across the street.

two years after she graduated, Jennifer married her high school sweetheart,

Aaron. They have three children together, ages 6, 7, and 14.

When she was in Ball State, she was given an opportunity that would lead her to Plymouth.

“I did an internship, actually, at the law office through Ball State and then they hired me on,” she said about her start as a paralegal.

Her career at the United States Postal Service began in 2009 while she was working as a paralegal. She was a rural carrier associate (RCA) working one day a week. She would fill in, when needed, for the mail carriers and deliver mail around the rural areas of the county.

“I liked being out on my own, just me and the road. I liked the freedom of that,” she said about being an RCA.

According to Jennifer, the decision to switch from being a paralegal to working in the post office was due to the availability and increased amount of hours the USPS offered. Working for the post office also ran in the family.

“My uncle’s a mailman so I kind of knew about the post office a little,” she said.

For six years she worked part-time as a mail carrier before becoming a full-time carrier.

As officer in charge, Jennifer makes sure that the operations run smooth, that the mail gets out for delivery daily, and that the customers are taken care of.

When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Jennifer replied, “The interaction with the customers. I enjoy that and the carriers.”

For those that don’t know, it’s quite an operation to deliver the mail. “With all the packages that we handle, the mail, and for 58 cents you can mail something across the country within a few days. It still amazes me how it all works out. There’s so many possibilities within the post office whether you want to get into management, custodian craft, maintenance craft, vehicle maintenance. It’s just a huge and really interesting organization,” said Jennifer.

In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys yard work and spending quality time with her children.

Currently, Jennifer serves as the officer in charge of the Plymouth Post Office. She is also the Postmaster of the Bremen Post Office. When the Plymouth position is filled, Hutchison will make the transition to Bremen.

“I’m excited,” she said about moving to the Bremen location. “It’s going to be different, but I’m excited.”
