Local pediatrician combats formula shortage

- By Jamie Fleury Staff Writer

Dr. Noemi adame, local and independent Pediatrician of Culver Pediatrics Center is combatting the formula supply shortage with a formula drive and sharing helpful information with the public through press releases.

In addition to a collaborative effort with Nurse Rebecca Morales in coordinating a local formula drive, Dr. adame has shared some strategies and advice on how families can cope safely to ensure that their formulafed infant continues to have proper nutrition.

Dr. adame recommends checking smaller retailers and pharmacies in small towns and in smaller markets. She encouraged parents to avoid purchasing larger quantities than what they need.

Families might consider ordering online from reputable sources. Be sure to check the lot number and expiration date to confirm that the product is not expired and not on the recall list.

Some pediatricians have samples available and some families have

unused, unopened formula that is not expired and not recalled.

Dr. adame shared that

unless an infant is on a prescription formula it is okay to feed the child

using a different brand of formula or formula type.

Be sure to address any safety concerns for the baby and questions about trying other formulas with your child’s pediatrician or medical provider.

Families who have unopened formula that they would like to donate should email nurse@culverpediatrics. com to schedule a drop off or pick up location and time. Requests from families who are being impacted by the shortage may email Nurse Morales at the same email.

Some mothers may consider relactating for infants less than six months old. Consult your baby’s pediatrician or a lactation consultant. Additional information can be found online at www.milkguide. com or on Facebook @ Birth Queens and Milk

Queens.

Donor milk can be purchased from The Milk Bank of Indiana by completing a recipient form. There is an option to select Culver Pediatrics for pick up. Pay the Milk Bank online for the purchased milk. Email info@culverpediatrics.com to schedule that pick up.

Culver Pediatrics is located at 16427 18th Road, Culver.
