Plymouth, Triton to square off for sectional title

- By Rusty nixon Sports editor

BREMEN — Plymouth’s Lady Pilgrims continue their outstanding season as they made a clean sweep of a very tough Bremen squad 5-0 to move on to the sectional final at Bremen.

They will move on to face Triton who’s singles players dominated Laville on the way to claiming their win.

The only blip on a perfect night for Triton was at #1 doubles where Laville’s team of Lauren Dove and Makenna Tribbey, defeated Triton’s Olivia Shively and Gwyneth Borsa 6-0, 6-0.

That win will keep Dove and Tribbey in the individual state tournament.

“Bremen’s girls played a great match,” said Plymouth head coach Brad Haeck. “They should be very proud of their performances tonight.”

The contested matches started right away at #1 singles with Bremen’s Grace Meyer battling Plymouth’s Aubrey Vervynckt down to the wire. Vervynckt finally to a match that lasted over two hours and ended 7-6(3), 6-3.

“We’ve tried to work on her being a little more aggressive at times to make her opponent play more defense and not have her have to play it all the time,” said Haeck. “But she does a great job at that. She’s mentally tough. She got a little frustrated at times tonight but she hangs in there, she’s smart and she just grinds out matches.”

Another marathon match was at #3 singles. Another two hour match saw Plymouth’smorgan Langfeldt (P) beat Breanna Bush (B) 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

Players also battled the elements in the semi-final round with the wind and

the heat both having an influence.

“I feel like the wind was definitely a factor,” said Haeck. “It was a different game depending on which side (of the net) you were on. We did a nice job on the doubles court of just cutting off balls whenever we could and that saved us a lot. In Aubrey’s match I feel like it played a part, but in the other singles matches not as much.”

Haeck says that the Lady Trojans would look like underdogs on paper, but Saturday’s match will be even.

“They don’t play tennis matches on paper,” said Haeck. “We are going to show up and we are going to be ready to play. Triton is going to give us their best.” Sectional Semi-finals at Desantis Courts, Bremen
