HS girls track one step away from state meet

- By Ron Haramia Sports Writer

Last week’s sectionals ended the season for a number of high school girls track and field athletes.

This week the competition level goes up even higher for those still competing as regionals takes place at Kokomo HS on Tuesday night.

The top three in each event or relay there will qualify for the state meet on Friday, June 3, at the Robert C. Haugh Track &

Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington.

Culver Girls Academy’s team was impressive in winning the Bremen Sectional and will have a large contingent looking to take the final step in the state tournament. Senior Cecille Figueroa is expected to compete in four events (100, 200, 4x100, 4x400), as is junior Lena Spiller (HJ, 300H, LJ, 4x400 relay). Other performers are seniors Madison

Miller (discus), Mckenna Littleton (discus), Madison Rivera (400, 4x800), Martha Weirick (4x800) and Sophie Nash (4x800), juniors Susan Bourdier (PV), Margaret Vermeulen (800, 4x800) and Brighton Bird (200), sophomores Celeste Gram (1600), Quinn Bird 400, Madeleine Harris (4x100, 4x400), Grace Gibbs (4x100, 4x400) and Andresa Orendain (4x100), plus freshman Ella Bilton (1600).

Plymouth’s best chances to head to state are senior Aumrie Weiss Heckaman, who won the 100 hurdles at sectionals and nearly doubled in the 300H, finishing second by just .04 of a second to CGA’S Spiller, senior Sydney Rice (discus, shot) and sophomore Sophie Wray (800).

“Aumrie has an excellent chance to move on to the state meet in the 300m hurdles the way she has been attacking them the last two meets,” said PHS head coach Rick Stiles. “Sydney is the third seed in the shot put and sixth for discus. Her prospects on punching a ticket to the state meet are hers for the taking. Sophie can battle and compete for one of

those coveted state meet spots in the 800m when she runs another season best.”

Weiss Heckaman is also part of the 4x400 relay team that will be competing. Other regional participants representing the Lady Pilgrims are seniors Amber

Schraymeyer (4x100), Summer South (4x100, 4x400) and Sara Calix Moreno (4x100), junior Rilynn Ames (4x100), plus freshmen Arielle Ferman (PV), Sonya Joseph (4x400, 300H), Sue Everett (4x400) and Joy Everett (HJ).

Junior Amaya Ameling ran a leg in the 4x400 at sectionals and will be ready if called upon at regionals.

“Our sectional was very competitive,” added Stiles. “Aumrie and Sonya had really solid performances in the hurdles and awesome 4x400m relay legs. Both of our relay teams ran solid. A few of our girls were running their third or fourth race of the day. Both relay teams will be fresher at regionals and we hope to see the 4x100m relay challenge the school record.”

Bremen will have seven athletes competing Tuesday. Entered will be freshman Hannah Pezzuto in the 100 hurdles, the 4x400 relay team of freshman Gracelynn Stevens, freshman Elle Libey, sophomore Zeta Nunemaker and sophomore Hallie Klockow, plus the 4x100 relay team of Libey, Nunemaker, freshman Kila Foster and senior Agnese Masini.

Triton’s lone participant is senior Makenna May in the pole vault.
