Demis making waves in local sailing

BASS LAKE — Moses may not be parting the Red Sea, but he is putting a crease in Bass Lake this summer.

Soon to be an eighth grader at Knox, 13 year old Moses Demis has had an amazing summer sailing his Alcort Sunfish in competition on Bass Lake.

He finished 4th overall for the Bill Lavery Memorial Race at the Bass Lake Festival, which was also second in his class.

He closed out the Early Summer Racing Series for the Bass Lake Indiana Yacht Club with first place by 14 points and averaged beating 82.7% of participants in each race during the season.

"It's really cool because I sail with all adults and really cool to show a kid can do that too," admitted Moses. Dimes got a very early start out on the water.

"I've always liked being out on the water and my dad (Chad) and his friend have always been sailing and so I just naturally got into it," he said. "I really love it."

"I started when I was 8," said Moses. "I was in a sailing course at Maxinkuckee Adventure Sailing (Culver) where they taught me how to sail and I learned a lot. I sailed for five years there and last year and a lot this year I've switched to Bass Lake."

"They've started an entire community (of sailors) and it's really cool. It's open class so any boat can sail."

The sport can be a bit lonely for Moses as he sails his boat by himself.

"I sail an Alcort Sunfish and it's nine to 12 foot boat," said Moses. "It's a little bigger than a young child starter boat and a lot of people in my yacht club sail a Sunfish."

"I learned at a young age and it wasn't really that hard," he said. "I just progressed to bigger boats as I went."

Moses will come to Culver as usual in the fall for Sunfish Regatta and CMA'S Fall Regatta, both very big events for sailors.
