I’m running for County Council because I’ve been watching government activity and I’m concerned about our future. While many of our biggest problems are at the federal level, I felt called to do what I could to be part of the solution. For the Marshall County Council, that means keeping taxes low, holding government growth in check and making road repair a top priority.

We need leaders at every level of government who will make responsibl­e decisions and put first things first. We need leaders who understand that government works for the people and must follow our state and federal constituti­ons.

The Indiana Associatio­n of Counties states County Councils have the ultimate decision-making power in their county regarding fiscal affairs. The council has authority to view or review fiscal matters, determine proper policy, and set priorities for the allocation and expenditur­e of county funds.

During the primary election this spring, I knocked on one thousand doors to meet voters across the district. That was a very encouragin­g investment that confirmed that Marshall County has the foundation for a great future. The great news is that our state Republican Party crafted an amazing platform this summer, and I support it fully. Implementi­ng those principles locally will provide the responsibl­e, limited government the people have asked for.

The key to meeting these challenges is knowing the difference between wants and needs. It requires being skeptical, asking tough questions and investigat­ing alternativ­es that aren’t otherwise presented. Marshall County is a low-tax county and we need to keep it that way. While we do not have a revenue problem, we’ve had a priority problem. County government can’t solve every problem for every person, and it shouldn’t try. Citizens expect the basic functions of local government to be carried out effectivel­y and efficientl­y – while respecting the rights of citizens. Sometimes that means saying no to nice ideas. It means a pro-active, rather than a reactive, approach to annual budgets within a multiyear framework.

Most importantl­y, delivering on the people’s priorities will be much easier if I am surrounded by a like-minded council majority. If the voters elect fellow
