I’m running for County Council because I’ve been watching government activity and I’m concerned about our future. While many of our biggest problems are at the federal level, I felt called to do what I could to be part of the solution. For the Marshall County Council, that means keeping taxes low, holding government growth in check and making road repair a top priority.
We need leaders at every level of government who will make responsible decisions and put first things first. We need leaders who understand that government works for the people and must follow our state and federal constitutions.
The Indiana Association of Counties states County Councils have the ultimate decision-making power in their county regarding fiscal affairs. The council has authority to view or review fiscal matters, determine proper policy, and set priorities for the allocation and expenditure of county funds.
During the primary election this spring, I knocked on one thousand doors to meet voters across the district. That was a very encouraging investment that confirmed that Marshall County has the foundation for a great future. The great news is that our state Republican Party crafted an amazing platform this summer, and I support it fully. Implementing those principles locally will provide the responsible, limited government the people have asked for.
The key to meeting these challenges is knowing the difference between wants and needs. It requires being skeptical, asking tough questions and investigating alternatives that aren’t otherwise presented. Marshall County is a low-tax county and we need to keep it that way. While we do not have a revenue problem, we’ve had a priority problem. County government can’t solve every problem for every person, and it shouldn’t try. Citizens expect the basic functions of local government to be carried out effectively and efficiently – while respecting the rights of citizens. Sometimes that means saying no to nice ideas. It means a pro-active, rather than a reactive, approach to annual budgets within a multiyear framework.
Most importantly, delivering on the people’s priorities will be much easier if I am surrounded by a like-minded council majority. If the voters elect fellow
