Big 4Q leads Lady Lions to win over Lady Falcons

- By RON Haramia Sports Writer

BREMEN - US 6 rivals Bremen and Glenn came into Tuesday night’s Northern Indiana Conference high school girls basketball game tied in the NIC standings and for three quarters of their ball game, the scoreboard showed them even as well. But a huge fourth-quarter uprising by the Lady Lions ended up being the difference as Bremen took the 47-29 win over the Lady Falcons at the Lions Den.

“That’s the kind of quarter we’ve been waiting to see,” said Bremen head coach Alex Robinson. “We had a little lead throughout the third quarter and then for them to tie it up, that’s when you figure out who you are as a team. If that fourth quarter is who we are, I’ll be more than happy with that.”

Until that fateful quarter, the pattern of the night was Bremen would lead by a little, then Glenn would catch up. The Lady Lions jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the game, but by the end of the first quarter, the Lady Falcons were down just three points and Kennedy Hayden’s three-point play to start the second period tied the score. Bremen made just one field goal during the second frame, but a 6-for-9 effort from the free-throw line and its scrappy zone defense gave them a slim three-point lead at halftime.

Bremen maintained control in the third quarter and led by seven twice, the last time on a Chloe Miller shot in the lane, but a 6-0 run by the Glenn to end the stanza had the score knotted once again, 26-all, heading to the final eight minutes. From then on though, just about everything turned to gold for the home team and not so much for the visitors.

Kila Foster, who had struggled finding her shooting range earlier in the game, opened the fourth quarter with a 3, then followed that with a three-point play. Mickey Shively then hit Eliana Grubbs in stride for a fast break layup before scoring on a drive herself and shortly thereafter Katie Moyer was slashing to the basket for another Bremen bucket. The 12-0 run was finally stopped by a 3 from Rylee Johnson, but that would be the only points for Glenn in the final period. Bremen scored nine unanswered points over the final four minutes for the final margin.

“That’s the quarter we needed where we are at

in the season, to see different girls stepping up and making plays,” added Robinson. “Kila had kind of an off night until she went on that burst, but it was everybody, all five on the court and those that came into the game. That’s exactly what we needed.

“I thought we bought in on the defensive end. If you can commit on the defensive end, you can have control over that. On offense, we are taking some time figuring things out, but I think it came around.”

Foster (4-5 FTS) finished as the game’s leading scorer with 17 points, eight coming in the fourth quarter. Shively was also in double figures with 10. Bremen had 12 made free throws to just 3 for Glenn. Six of the Lady Falcons’ eight core players scored, but the highest amount was Keelyn Bradley’s seven.

Glenn hits the court again Saturday for a home matinee against South Central tipping at 2:30 p.m. Bremen, now in a three-way tie for the thirdbest NIC mark along with Marian and SB Adams, doesn’t play again until Tuesday at home versus NIC foe South Bend St. Joseph. • BREMEN 47, GLENN 29 At Bremen
