BOURBON — The boys and girls high school basketball teams from Culver and Triton met up at the Trojan Trench Friday night for a Hoosier North Athletic Conference varsity doubleheader. In the girls game, Triton came away with the 30-23 win, while the Triton boys were victorious, 26-24, on a last second shot. Next up for all four teams is the Bi-county Tournament that starts on Tuesday. Triton’s boys and girls host Bremen, while Culver hosts Argos’ teams.

In a defensive battle where neither team led by more than four points through three quarters, Triton scored almost as many points in the final period (14) as the first three combined (16) to snag the home HNAC win. It is the fourth straight win for the Lady Trojans.

Addyson Viers scored four of her team-high nine points in the fourth quarter. Culver used a box-andone defense all game to slow down Kinsey Atkins, but the Triton senior guard was able to connect of 5-of6 free throws to go along with a 3-pointer for a hard-earned eight points. Jocelynn Faulkner had a key triple in the fourth quarter as part of her eightpoint night. Sierra Hawley led the team in rebounding with seven.

The game was tied at 21 with 4:13 remaining before the Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Cavaliers 9-2 the rest of the way, including a 5-for-6 effort from the foul line over the last 46 seconds. Culver was hampered by three offensive foul calls the last four minutes and did not have a field goal in the final period. Kennedy Jackson scored four of her team-high eight points in the final frame, all from the charity stripe. She also pulled down 13 rebounds for the game to lead that category for both teams.

Dante Workman’s last second shot gave Triton the win and Trojans head coach Jason Groves his 300th career win - all at THS. With the victory, Triton stays unbeaten and in first place atop the HNAC standings.

With the score tied at 24 and 45 seconds remaining, Groves called a timeout to set up the final sequence.

“We knew they would pressure us, but I told the players ‘If you have a good shot, take it.’ We wanted to get it to (Cole) Shively eventually, but they took that away. Give credit to (Jacob) Pitney. He did not panic or force things, then found Dante, who stepped up and made a play.”

Culver head coach Kyle Evans was not around to see the ending, as he received two technicals in the waning seconds of the third quarter and was ejected.

Shively was Triton’s leading scorer with 12 points and Workman finished with eight. Emiliano Ortiz led Culver with nine points, all coming on three-pointers. Out of nine made field goals for the Cavaliers, six came from beyond the arc. The Trojans did not have any field goals from 3, while the Cavs did not score from the foul line in just two attempts.
