- By Ron Haramia Sports Writer

BREMEN - Opening night of the IHSAA girls basketball sectionals began with two games at Bremen HS for Class 3A Sectional 18. In the opener, Glenn came away with the 35-27 victory over Culver Girls Academy, while in the nightcap Bremen clamped down on Rochester, 34-21.

Glenn will now play Knox (5-19) in the first semifinal on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by Bremen versus sectional-favorite Tippecanoe Valley (19-3) in the second semi, tipping off around 7:30 p.m. Both games are rematches from earlier this season. Glenn defeated Knox, 52-40, back on Nov. 5 while Bremen lost to TV, 68-32, on Nov. 3.

In a defensive battle for both teams, Glenn found scoring much easier from the foul line, hitting 11-of13 in the fourth quarter to finally pull away from a pesky CGA squad. The game was tied on five occasions over the first three quarters, the last time heading to the final period at 20-all, and was still a one-point game with a little over five minutes remaining. Lucy Hayden scored all five of her points to start the fourth quarter to give Glenn a 25-21 lead, then not long after, the Lady Falcons were able to milk the clock for almost two minutes before a miss. CGA’S Dionna Craig hit a free throw to cut the lead to three with 2:39 remaining, but from there on, Glenn hit 10 straight free throws around Craig’s three-point play to put the game out of reach.

Kennedy Hayden led Glenn in scoring with 12 points. Danni Devine nailed a 3 as part of her five points off the bench and Addison Reese was 4-for-4 from the line for the Lady Falcons. CGA had six players score, but Craig’s eight was the high mark.

BREMEN ROCHESTER 21

Defense reigned supreme in the second game as well, but it was more one-sided. Bremen was content to watch Rochester dribble around, make handoffs, then dribble around some more. The Lady Zebras were good at that, but not so hot with scoring. The Lady Lions, who were considered the visitors on their home floor, allowed

just two points in the first quarter and Rochester had just seven by halftime.

Bremen didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard, but had enough points after three

quarters (22) to win this game.

Bremen figured out Rochester’s 1-1-3 zone in the second half when Katie Moyer scored 12 of her game-high 14 points after intermission. The senior also had four blocks and was the team’s leading rebounder. Kila Foster hit a pair of 3s and finished with eight points. Rochester hit back-to-back treys to cut

the lead to five early in the fourth quarter, but were outscored 10-2 the rest of the way.

Bremen scored the first five points of the game, led by as much as nine in the second quarter, and the difference was as high as 10 in the third after six straight points from Moyer. Emma Howdeshell, Rochester’s second-leading scorer, sat almost the entire third

frame after getting her fourth foul. The senior eventually fouled out and finished with just one made field goal and three points. The gap reached its highest mark at 15 with 1:08 remaining in the game before an inconsequential bucket by Rochester resulted in the final margin.
