Westview has its way with PHS

- By rusty Nixon sports editor

PLYMOUTH — In a rare Saturday afternoon start, Plymouth’s Pilgrims ran into a buzzsaw in Westview, falling by a final of 47-34 on Senior Day.

“We flat out got outplayed in every area,” said Plymouth head coach Joel Grindle. “Offensively, defensively, on the boards. Hats off to them. They did exactly what they wanted to do. Shooting was a mega issue. Execution was a mega issue. Grabbing rebounds was a mega issue. There’s not a lot of things that you can pinpoint other than we got outworked and beaten in every aspect of the game.”

The smaller Warriors gained control of the game with a dominant first half on the boards and a swarming half-court defense that had the Pilgrims off balance from the opening tip.

“It was more out in the passing lanes and for whatever reason we couldn’t get our guys to cut and get open,” said Grindle. “That was the emphasis all day that you have to get open. Our cutting, our moving, our passing — they contested every pass.”

Westview gained control of the game in the second quarter and then rode the shooting of Brady Yoder to a 14-point lead at the third quarter break.

Plymouth was able to get it back to 11, but that was as close as they could get.

Easton Strain fouled out of the game with three minutes to play, but to that point he was the only answer Plymouth had to the Westview defense.

Strain ended the game with a double/double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

“Easton did some things, but they put so much pressure and help on him,” said Grindle. “The same thing with Kadyn (Ellery), and Michael (Sheely). When we tried to get inside they sagged off and they forced somebody to hit a shot. We have some nice bigs inside and they really cheated off and forced us to hit shots and tonight we didn’t do it.”
