HS boys bball takes center stage during the week

- By RON Haramia Sports Writer

Only one local high school girls team is still playing now that sectionals are over. Argos captured its second straight sectional title by defeating Triton and now will play at the Caston Regional this Saturday. Look for a preview of that game in Thursday’s Pilot News.

As for the boys, three weeks remain in the regular season with the sectional pairings being announced on Sunday, Feb. 19. Here are capsule previews for the games taking place locally tonight through Thursday. Almost every area boys team playing those nights will be on the road.

Tuesday tussles Plymouth @ Rochester

The first of two games this week for Plymouth (7-10) has the Pilgrims traveling to Rochester (9-6). Plymouth has dominated this series (33-5 over the last 35 years), but the teams have not played since 2015. After two big NLC wins, the Pilgrims were humbled in their last outing. The best way to get rid of that bad taste is for a road win. The Zebras have alternated between a win and a loss the last seven games. They won Saturday so … Both teams have allowed around 48-49 ppg so this could be a close contest.

Bremen @ Jimtown

Bremen (1-15, 0-7 NIC) enjoyed that sweet taste of success in its 10-point win over Oregon-davis Saturday afternoon. The Lions return to Northern Indiana Conference play with this trip to Jimtown (3-15, 0-8 NIC) and would love to add that first NIC win to its resume. The Jimmies are also looking for that elusive first conference win so although the records are not great, this has the makings of a hotly-contested game.

Triton @ Trinity

Triton (9-7) steps out of conference for this trip to South Bend to take on potential sectional foe Trinity (3-14). The Titans have scored 67 and 66 points in their last two games (both wins).

Argos @ Caston

Argos (10-5) makes the trip to fellow Class 1A school Caston (6-10) to start its week. This was originally a three-game week for the Dragons, but Saturday’s game at Fort Wayne Wayne has been canceled due to the Argos girls team playing at regionals that same day.

Victory Christian @ Culver Academy

Culver Academy (11-5) has gone 5-1 since losing to Class 3A No. 2* Mishawaka Marian and being without second-leading scorer Thomas Collins due to injury since then as well. The Eagles will get another test tonight when they host Victory Christian. The Lions, out of Valparaiso, are a non-sanctioned IHSAA school so it is hard to find information on them, but VC is 20-5 against a schedule that includes South Bend Adams, Mishawaka and Marquette Catholic. CMA defeated VC a year ago by 14.

Thursday thrillers

Argos @ Culver

The Dragons’ second game of the week is the annual Bell Game at potential sectional foe Culver (8-7). Argos won the Bi-county meeting between these two, 43-39, about three weeks ago. The Cavaliers are currently on a three-game winning streak.
