Things to Ponder

- BY JAN HOUIN

I have a habit of clipping quotes and sayings that I think are motivational, educational or inspirational.

Unfortunately, I put them aside and don’t look at them often, if at all. However, last week I came across a stack of them so I thought I’d share. Hopefully something will speak to you and your life. I wish I could give credit to where these all came from, but I just jot them down without always noting where I got them. I hope you don’t mind that I’ve added my personal comments to most of these.

“There is one good way to fail, and that’s not to try.” This reminds me of the saying we’ve all heard many times, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

“Perfect is good, done is better.” As somewhat of a perfectionist myself, I’ve learned that if a perfectionist doesn’t think they will get something done perfectly, they don’t even start. (Like cleaning my house for instance!) It’s best to get it done, even if it’s not perfect.

“You’ll more likely do your best when you’re dressed your best.” I truly believe that how you dress affects your attitude. Judging by appearances may not be right, but it happens.

“Remember, everyone loves to hear the words, ‘Oh, please tell me more.’” I need this reminder because most people that know me, know that I like to talk.

“Tough times don’t last forever, tough people do.” A good reminder when things aren’t going well. “Smile, you don’t own all the problems in the world.”

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” Good advice for our world today when there seems to be so much division.

“Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It’s not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make. PERIOD” And to go with that… “You are the sum of the choices you make in life.” “No one is the reason for your happiness except you yourself.”

“Don’t compare your life with others, you have no idea what their journey is all about.” When you compare yourself to others, you often compare your weaknesses to their strengths and that’s not fair to you. “What others think of you is none of your business.”

“The harder you work, the luckier you will be.” And to go along with that…”luck happens when preparation and opportunity meet.”

“Perception is everything.” “Perception is reality.” No matter what you mean, how the other person perceives it is their reality.

“Stop thinking too much, it’s alright not to know all the answers.” “You can learn from someone.” None of us knows it all, there is always more to learn.

“If something seems too good to be true, it probably isn’t.” This one should save people from getting scammed!

“It isn’t a bargain if you don’t need it.” This is my husband’s favorite quote from his grandpa. I wonder why he thinks I need to hear it so often?

“The brook would lose it’s song if we removed the rocks.” “The forest would be very silent if only the best birds sang.”

“Teamwork makes the dream work.” Mary Kay always told us that if each of us had a good idea, we each had one idea. If we shared that idea, we would each have two good ideas.

“Make peace with your past so it doesn’t spoil your present.” “Time heals almost everything, give the time, some time.”

“Money can buy a fine dog, but only love will make its tail wag.”
