A Blessing for Your Journey
Reflections on Psalm 23
“You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.” Psalm 23:5
For my readers, especially in the Plymouth and surrounding areas, you have heard that the Catherine Kasper Home in Donaldson will be closing. The announcement was made on October 13th, last year, which seemed like a far date; but this time next week the facility will be closed. Closing can be a sad event, but joy can be felt because closure often brings openings to our spiritual journey. Let me share what happens when one of our residents is preparing to move to another place to live.
Notification is sent to all staff members that one of our residents is moving on a certain date. All paperwork is completed for the move to take place. I visit with the resident for a day or two, if possible, as they prepare for their new home. When the time for their departure arrives, staff members gather at the front entrance for a time of prayer and blessing. The prayer is read by staff members, as we all hold our hands over our departing friend. We want them to know that we are not just letting them without notice, but with the peace and blessing of our Lord. Emotions are high, but the tears and hugs are healing.
The 23rd Psalm is a reminder to us all, that we are never in this world alone. The Lord leads us through good times in life and guides us when life situations are tough and confusing. The difficult times in life can be seen as enemies in our lives, but God protects us with his grace and peace. Life is a journey of new opportunities which leads to God’s throne of grace, to our new home in heaven.
Dear Lord, remind me always that you lead and guide me in my spiritual journey. When I meet others who are experiencing transitions in their life, may I bring your healing presence to them. You anoint us with your healing oil and our cup overflows with your blessings, Amen.
