BREMEN - The Bremen

High School girls tennis team will have plenty of new faces in new places this season and will rely on its experience at the singles positions, while the doubles lineup sorts itself out.

“Our veteran players will look to hold down the top singles spots and we will count heavily on them for leadership and also points in our matches,” said Bremen head coach Brita Miller, who will be assisted by Laura Barnes. “Our doubles players will be inexperienced at the varsity level and we will be looking to develop them early in the season and figure out our most competitive lineup. We will need them to step up as we get to the critical parts of our schedule. We will also be asking a lot from freshman Emma Lawmaster. She is young, but has played a lot of tennis and has been around the team and the game for most of her life. ”

The only two returning letterwinners are juniors Sylvia Meyer and Chloe Miller. Lawmaster is officially a newcomer to the team, but as the fourth of four girls to play for the Lady Lions, she is very familiar with the program and should fill one of the singles spots.

Bremen will see where it stands early on as it takes on sectional foe Plymouth in its second match of the season (Apr. 12), followed by the Northern Indiana Conference opener the next day. Other schedule highlights include the Goshen Tournament (Apr. 15), the Bremen Tournament (Apr. 22) and the NIC tournament (Apr. 26-27).

“The NIC always brings elite talent at the top and strength through the middle,” added Miller. “We hope to continue our tradition of contending for the regular season championship in our division and make a strong showing at the NIC tourney.”

Bremen will once again be a host site for sectionals. The five-team field also includes Glenn, Laville, Plymouth and Triton. Plymouth is the defending champ. Bremen won it in 2021.

“We set out to win that sectional every year, and we feel that is a realistic goal this year and key motivator going into the season,” Miller said.
