Falcons to file this away quickly

- By RON Haramia Sports Writer

WALKERTON Sometimes in baseball, at the end of a one-sided loss all you can say is, “Just one of those days.” Every team from Little League to the Majors will have (at least) one game like that.

For Class 3A No. 15 Glenn, Wednesday qualifies. 6H, 8R, 3ER, 1K, 3BB, 2HBP). The first two RBIS were from a bases loaded walk, followed by a hit batter. With one out and the bases still full, Brady Miller relieved Platz and was greeted by a three-run double by Zach Stawski, one of four hits and three two-baggers for the game by the St. Joe senior out of the two-hole in the lineup. The damage would have been even worse if not for a terrific diving stop, then throw to first by third baseman Brycen Hannah on a hot grounder down the line.

Miller used an effective curve ball to keep the Indians off balance for the next three innings (two hits, no runs) before they tagged the junior for seven runs off three hits, two walks and two hit batters in the seventh inning. The big blow was a three-run home run by Jayce Lee. Jack Laskowski came in to get the final out, but St. Joe was able to string together three straight singles and a fielder’s choice before a fly out finally ended the Indians’ at-bat, adding nine runs on six hits.

Six different Falcons had base hits, led by Hannah’s two (2B, 2 RBIS), but only one inning had multiple knocks and that was the last inning when the outcome had been decided for all intents and purposes. Besides Hannah’s defensive gem, Glenn catcher Matt Ciula made a fantastic hustle catch on a foul ball pop-up.

The Falcons will get a chance to make amends quickly as they have an NIC makeup game at South Bend Riley today. Glenn will then host Morgan Township on Saturday.
