PHS one better than AHS

- By Rusty Nixon

ARGOS — When Plymouth and Argos get together on the pitch you expect fireworks. Wednesday’s rematch had plenty, in the first 10 minutes.

In that time there were two goals, a yellow card on Plymouth goalie Alan Cantero and an amazing clutch save on a penalty kick on the first play by his replacement Wyatt Houin that ended up being the difference in a 4-3 Plymouth win.

“It’s Plymouth, Argos in soccer, what do you expect?” said Plymouth head coach Grant Masson. “It isn’t always about who plays the prettiest soccer but who is left standing at the end.”

“What do they say? Little guys can do big things too?” said Masson of goalie Houin’s clutch play. “He’s one little guy that knows how to play goal and he’s a sophomore and that makes it more special. That’s two PKS he’s saved for us. He feels like he can save the day with things like that.”

“We have been working on some positioning things in practice that I think paid off tonight,” said Argos Coach Todd Vanderweele. “We had by far the best group effort that we’ve had and I’m really proud of the way they fought for each other.”

Diego Zelaya hit the first of his three goals on the night five minutes in, followed two minutes later by Kenyon Beldon’s first of two for the Dragons.

Argos came out and took a page out of the Rockies book forcing the issue to make a wild ride of a soccer match that bounced back and forth for the whole night.

Finally with three minutes left in the game Plymouth’s Eddy Mencias found himself in front of the goal for the game-winner.

“We played for 60 minutes without (Sean Richard) the guy who’s been out here more than anybody,” said Vanderweele. “That says a lot for our guys. That’s what you want. To come together behind each

other like that. That’s all we could do and we did that.”
