The Nun II and A Haunting in Venice

- BY GAVIN GREER

Last weekend my friends and I went out to see The Nun II. This movie is a prequel of the Conjuring movies, this prequel takes place a few years after the first Nun movie left off. The movie saw Irene and Maurice face off against Valak, the demon nun, again.

I really enjoyed this movie, it had a good story, the characters were interesting and the scares were good too.

Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Anna Popplewell, Katelyn Rose Downey and Storm Reid made up the main cast. Each actor brought an interesting character that had important parts in the movie. They all felt like they had a good connection on screen and they worked together well.

The story was great as it further explained the origin of a character that appeared in other movies from this series. An after credits scene that closed out the movie gave an exciting look at what may be coming soon for the series.

This was one of the better horror movies that I have seen so far this year. While it did have jump scares, I do not think that the movie relied on this tactic to scare the audience. Dark setting and dread was used to create tension for the other scary parts.

Next week I will be going to see A Haunting in Venice. This is the third movie of the Hercule Poirot series that is based on the mystery novels of Agatha Chrisite.

This chapter of the series sees Poirot played by Kenneth Branagh, the films director, in post-world War II Venice. He is now retired and living in self imposed exile. He leaves his exile to reluctantly attend a seance, but once one of the guests at the seance is murdered, it is up to the former detective to uncover the killer.

I think that I will enjoy this movie, I really like the Murder on the Orient Express, the first movie in the series, and I thought that Death on the Nile, the second movie, was okay.

If the movie can make it harder to guess the guilty character, then I think I will like it! This movie starring Branagh, Michelle Yeoh and Tina Fey releases this Friday. Other movies that release this week are Outlaw Johnny Black and Camp Hideout.

Outlaw Johnny Black is directed by, written by and stars Michael Jai White. This movie follows Johnny Black as he tries to avenge the death of his father. This movie also stars Anika Noni Rose and Eric Ash.

Camp Hideout is a movie about a troubled teen who steals an important item from two goons from the big city. The teen hides out at a church summer camp and finds that he must protect his new friends at all costs when the goons track him down.

This movie stars Corbin Bleu, Ethan Drew and Christopher Lloyd.

This weeks box office looks very different as new movies have finally taken the top spots.

The top earner was The Nun II. It had a weekend gross of $33M and has brought is $40M in its first week of release.

In 2nd was The Equalizer 3. This movie had a $12M weekend gross bringing its total gross to $66M.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 took the 3rd spot in the box office in its first week of release. Its $10M weekend gross and $13M total gross is not as good of an opening as the first two movies.

An Indian movie took the 4th spot in the box office as Jawan gained $6.1M in its first weekend of release. Its total gross is $7.5M.
