Lincoln students are in need of instruments

- By Gavin Greer Staff Writer

PLYMOUTH — Lincoln Junior High band students do not have enough instruments at this time and are forced to share. Plymouth High School (PHS) music boosters will take any and all used instruments that people may have lying around. these will be serviced and will go to the students that need them.

Students at Lincoln are on block scheduling this year and do not have as many days to practice with their instruments in band class.

“It is important for beginning students to practice their instrument and become familiar with it outside of class. Without enough instruments, students cannot practice outside of class time,” a band booster said.

While sharing instruments, students need to spend more time cleaning and sanitizing the instruments. Students also have to take care of their instruments and are held liable for keeping their instruments ready for performances. If something happens to a shared instrument, then there are two students who are now out an instrument. If the band had enough instruments then a student would be able to share, instead they now have to wait for it to be fixed.

“If each student had an instrument they could take them home and practice. If we had extra instruments a student who may be struggling with learning an instrument may be able to try a different one. also, some students are naturally gifted and could play a more advanced instrument if there were enough available, such as a clarinet player could play a bass clarinet, or a student who’s mastered an instrument could try to learn a new one. Students can’t afford to buy multiple instruments but if the school had a variety of extras, then they would get a lot more opportunities to try new things,” a band booster said.

Band boosters help fund many things for grades 6-12. this includes bus fees, event entry fees, marching band props, props for winter showcase, the purchase of music rights, food and uniforms for the students who perform.

the PHS Music Boosters will be putting on a fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 9 a.m.

this fundraiser costs $42 to take part in. this fee covers for the supplies involved in the project, the remainder of the money will go to the boosters projects.

the fundraiser will let those who are interested design their own porch leaner. this will take one to three hours to complete depending on the amount of creativity and fun that is put into it.

there are three options of leaners, they are all holiday themed. the first leaner option says, merry Christmas, and has a wreath on it. the second says, gnome for the holidays, and has a gnome head and a gingerbread man on it. the final option says, welcome winter, and has snowflakes on it.

the registration deadline for the fundraiser is Friday, Nov. 10 or however long spots remain open.

there will also be concessions at the event that will serve breakfast food and drinks. the money from this part will go towards the PHS Music Boosters general fund where they will put it towards props, shows and servicing the donated instruments.

If you want to help the boosters but are unable to attend the fundraiser then there are many ways to show support. the public can donate to the Music Boosters by reaching out to plybandboosters@gamil. com or through the school by contacting band instructor Bryan ames.
