Kung Fu Panda 4 and Civil War

- BY GAVIN GREER

Well we finally did it, we finally took my friend to see Kung Fu Panda 4 after several weeks of our plans being changed.

Kung Fu Panda 4 was not the best movie, but it was probably better than most of the other options we had to watch this weekend.

This installment in the franchise sees Po, the Dragon Warrior, learn that he needs to give up his position and move into the role of Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. Po does not want to do this as he wants to keep “kicking butt” as the Dragon Warrior. While he is forced to look for his replacement he learns that a chameleon sorceress is attacking the nearby land under the appearance of Po’s greatest enemies. Because of this Po joins forces with a thief that he recently apprehended to go to the land of thieves where the sorceress is located.

I was not a big fan of this movie, but I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I was still a kid. Some of the characters were really funny and some of them were pretty cute as well. The story was pretty basic and you could predict just about everything that was about to happen in the film.

Jack Black voices Po and gave a great performance as he always does in comedy roles. Awkwafina voiced Po’s new friend and brought some funny moments to the movie as well. My favorite character was Po’s Panda dad who is voiced by Bryan Cranston, in my onion his character was the funniest.

While the story was pretty basic it was still done pretty well for a kids movie. The evil sorceress was voiced by Viola Davis who gave a great performance in her role.

This movie could have served as the conclusion to Po’s story but it looks like it will continue with a Kung Fu Panda 5 which will follow Po as he trains his new friend. I do not think this is the best idea as I would call it quits with what they have now.

This weekend my friends and I will be going to see Civil War. Civil War is a journey across dystopian future America that follows a team of military-embedded journalists while they race against time to reach Washington DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.

I am so excited to go see this film, it is one of my most anticipated movies for the year. The trailers look great, the description of the movie sounds great and I really like the people who make up the cast.

I have always liked the Purge franchise. While this movie is not part of that franchise, it does make me think of that series but on a bigger scale.

Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons and Stephen Mckinley Henderson make up the biggest names in the movie. Dunst plays the main character of the movie who is one of the journalists, I am not a big fan of her but I think she will be good in this role. Offerman plays the President in the movie, from the trailers he looks like he may have the best performance of his career in the movie. Plemons plays a small role in the movie as a soldier, Plemons is great in almost every role he is in so even if hes in a small part I am excited to see what he adds. Henderson has had many big supporting roles in the last few years, he looks to be one of the bigger supporting roles so I look forward to seeing what he adds this time.

There are six new movies coming out this weekend, these are Civil War, Arcadian, Sting, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, The Long Game and The Absence of Eden.

Arcadian is a horror movie that stars Nicolas Cage that follows a father and his twin teenage sons who have to fight to survive in a remote farmhouse at the end of the world. I recently saw the trailer for this movie and I think it looks great. This is a perfect role for Cage as he gets to be intense but also caring as his character looks out for his sons.

Sting is about a 12-year-old girl who is raising an unnervingly talented spider in secret. The girl must face the truth about her pet and fight for the survival of her family when her pet rapidly becomes a giant flesh eating monster. I also recently saw a trailer for this movie, I think it looked pretty bad as the acting looked bad.

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is about Tanya who finds her summer plans canceled when her mom jets off for a last minute retreat and the elderly babysitter who arrives at her door unexpectedly dies. This just sounds bad.

The Long Game is about five Mexican-american caddies in 1955 who out of the love for the game of golf were determined to learn how to play. To do the they created their own golf course in the middle of the south Texas dessert. Dennis Quaid stars in this movie.

The Absence of Eden is about an ICE Agent who is struggling with the moral dilemmas of boded security and an undocumented woman who is fighting to escape a ruthless cartel cross paths and work together to save the life of an innocent girl. Zoe Saldana stars in this movie.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire maintained the top spot of the box office last weekend with a weekend gross of $31M. Over two weeks the movie has grossed $141M.

Monkey Man took second place with a weekend gross of $10M. Over its first full week of release it has grossed $13M.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire fell another spot down to third after opening as the top spot of the box office. It had a weekend gross of $9M and has grossed $91M over three weeks.

The First Omen had a weekend gross of $8.4M which was good enough for fourth in the box office. Over its first full week of release this movie has grossed $10M.

Kung Fu Panda holds onto the top five after a weekend gross of $7.8M. Over five weeks it has grossed $168M.

I am very surprised that Dune: Part Two is out of the top five in its sixth week of release. The movie did not have the success I was expecting for it.
