“She showed up three days before the first practice. We had no idea of her,” Concannon said of Ma. “She’s 3-0 and only lost four games total. She’s been remarkably consistent. Her and Meera have really helped us because we are so senior-heavy in doubles.

“Plymouth is always good in doubles. Our usual No. 2 singles girl (senior Devilliers) moved to two doubles (Friday) and she hasn’t played a doubles match in two years so we had two days to get her up to speed. She and Dani hit the ball well enough to get by there.”

At No. 1 doubles, CGA’S all senior pairing of Charlotte Lemieux and Paulina Tavares lost the first set to Plymouth’s Cassidy Riddle and Emma Jackson, but at 3-3 in the second set won the next trio of games to even the match. The Lady Eagle duo had a similar scenario in the final set, winning two crucial games to turn a 3-2 lead into a commanding 5-2 gap before ultimately winning 6-3.

“We did a good job overall,” Concannon said. “We are finding ways to win matches that we didn’t win last year. We lost a ton of 3-2 matches last year. It seemed like every close, three-set match last year we lost. This year we’ve been good with close matches. I’m excited to see where we can get over the next few weeks.”

The highlight for the Lady Pilgrims came at No. 3 singles where senior Izzy Wray came back to win in a super tiebreaker. CGA’S Cherry Zheng took a long first set, 6-4, as both players were backboards, then Wray won the second set handily, 6-2, before breezing through the tiebreak, 10-1.

Both teams are back in action today. Plymouth hosts its invitational starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Mary Beth Hunter Tennis

Complex, while CGA heads to Laporte. The Lady Pilgrims travel to Northern Lakes Conference rival Warsaw next Tuesday.
