MARSHALL COUNTY — Marshall County Purdue Extension Health and Human Services is excited to offer an educational class about milk alternatives. The class is called Got Milk (Alternatives)? and will be held on Wednesday, May 15 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Marshall County Council on Aging which is located at 1305 W. Harrison St. in Plymouth.

This program was created in October of 2022 by Karen Richey, Health and Human Science Educator. She said that this was put together due to the consumer demand for “milk alternatives”. These demands have increased because of an increase in allergies, lactose sensitivity, animal or environmental concerns and product characteristics.

At this class Richey will discuss the topic and answer questions about alternative milks.

“Not all plant-based milk alternatives are created equal, there are nutritional differences,” Richey said when talking about why it is important to learn about this topic.

When talking about examples of milk alternatives Richey listed soy milk, almond milk, hemp milk and oat milk.

“The benefits vary from product to product, consumers must read the label when comparing milk alternatives and comparing to milk,” Richey said when discussing the benefits of alternatives.

There is no cost to take part in the program. People are asked to RSVP to 574-936-9904 by May 10.

“The program will discuss the pros and cons of milk alternatives and learn about those available on today’s marketer with the opportunity to taste test and compare the products,” Richey said when discussing why people should come out for the program.

For more information Richey can be contacted through krichey@purdue.edu or by calling 574-935-8545.
