Reacher and The Strangers: Chapter 1

- BY GAVIN GREER

Last weekend my friends and I did not go to a movie. On Friday we went to our friends Trent and Maddie’s wedding (congratulations to them). We all had other things to do on Saturday and Sunday so I am still not able to write about The Fall Guy or Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Instead of writing about a movie this week I will write about a tv show that I have started to watch again. This show is Amazon Prime’s Reacher. I watched the first season of the show around the time that it came out but have waited to watch the second season. I had wanted to read the book that the season is based on first but I have eight books to read before I am going to get back into the Reacher books so I think it is better to just watch it and read it eventually.

Reacher is about Jack Reacher, a former military police officer, who now lives a nomadic life traveling across the country. Reacher’s quiet life is interrupted when he arrives in Margrave, GA where he discovers that the idyllic town is a cesspool of corruption. Things become personal and he vows to burn it down.

I loved the first season of the show. I have read six books of the series and this one has been my favorite so I was excited that they decided to use it’s story for this season. The action is great and Alan Ritchson is perfect as Reacher. Some of the side characters are played by actors that are lacking but others do a good job.

I have only watched one episode of season two so far but it is just as good as season one. I am excited to watch the rest of it.

Before starting to watch this show I finished seasons one and two of The Bear. As I said last week this show is just great. The final episode of season two was so good and really set up an interesting season three as Carmen, Sydney, Richie and Marcus all have new issues to deal with. This has become my fourth favorite TV show behind Animal Kingdom, Ozark and Friday Night Lights. I think if season three is as good as the rest of the show then The Bear may be able to move past Friday Night Lights on my list.

As I have already written about The Fall Guy and The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes I will write about my third option for a movie that my friends and I can see this weekend, that is The Strangers: Chapter 1.

The Strangers is a retelling of a 2008 horror movie. This movie starred Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler as a couple who are spending the weekend at a lonely cabin when they begin to be hunted by three masked strangers.

The new Strangers movie is a bit different as the couple breaks down in a small eerie town this time instead of having plans to be there. They too begin to be hunted by three masked strangers. This movie will be the first of a three chapter saga that is supposed to tell more about the strangers.

I am excited to see a retelling of one of my favorite horror movies. The cast does not feature anyone as well known as Speedman and Tyler but from the trailers it looks like they should be good in this movie.

I am hoping that I can talk my friends into seeing two movies this weekend because there are a lot out right now and a lot coming out soon that we want to see. Right now we have two get caught up with The Fall Guy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. This weekend comes Strangers, IF and I Saw the TV Glow. The weekend after Furiosa and Garfield comes out so we will have seven movies coming out or are already out that we want to see in the next two weeks.

There are six new movies that come out this weekend. These are IF, Back to Black, The Strangers: Chapter 1, I saw the TV Glow, Babes and The American.

IF is about a young gurl who goes through a difficult experience and begins to see everyone’s imaginary friends who have been left behind when their real-life friends have grown up. I think that this movie looks very good. Ryan Reynolds, John Kraniski and Steve Carrell all star in the movie. I think that this is a very original film and it would be a great summer movie for families to go to.

Back to Black is the life and music of Amy Winehouse, through the journey of adolescence to adulthood and the creation of one of the best selling albums of our time. I have seen people online saying good things about this movie but it is not one that I will see. I have never heard of Winehouse but maybe people that know her will like it.

I Saw the TV Glow is about two teenagers who bond over their love for a supernatural TV show. Issues arise when it is mysteriously cancelled. My friend Zack was really excited to see the trailer for this movie a month ago. We all thought it looked pretty good.

Babes is the story of Eden who becomes pregnant from a one-night-stand. She leans on her married best friend and mother of two to guide her. This is not a movie that I will watch.

The American is about Joy Womack, an American ballet dancer, who is accepted into Moscow’s infamously tough Bolshoi Ballet Academy with the dream of becoming a great ballerina. This sounds like a pretty generic movie, I will not be watching.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes took the top spot in the box office after a $58M opening weekend. Over its first full week of release it has made $72M.

The Fall Guy took second place with a weekend gross of $14M. Over two weeks it has grossed $54M.

Third in the box office belongs to Challengers. It had a weekend gross of $4.4M, over three weeks it has grossed $40M.

Tarot, which has been getting very bad reviews, has managed to hold onto the fourth sport in the box office with a $3.4M weekend. It has grossed $13M over two weeks.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire held on to the top five with a $2.6M weekend. It has grossed $193M over seven weeks. As I said last week I thought it would maybe hold on for one last week, I expect it to be out of the top five next week.
