Eve­lyn Marie “Evelina” Gates, 86, of Prince Ge­orge, passed away Mon­day, Novem­ber 19, 2018. She was pre­ceded in death by her parents, Josephine and Joseph Cas­tro; a sis­ter, Priscilla Cas­tro; and two brothers, Anthony and Robert Cas­tro. She is sur­vived by her hus­band of 34 years Robert E. Gates; two step-sons, John and Danny Con­nolly; a brother, Edgar Cas­tro; and many lov­ing nieces and neph­ews.

She was an ac­tive vol­un­teer for many years with the Amer­i­can Red Cross.

The fam­ily will re­ceive friends from 2p.m. to 4p.m. Sun­day, Novem­ber 25, 2018, at the Colo­nial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Fu­neral Homes, 2033 Blvd, Colo­nial Heights, VA 23834 where a fu­neral ser­vice will be held 11a.m. Mon­day, Novem­ber 26, 2018. In­ter­ment will be pri­vate. Max­ine Sublett Hoover, 95, of Roanoke, Vir­ginia passed on to be with her Lord and Sav­ior on Wed­nes­day, Novem­ber 21, 2018 at Friend­ship As­sisted Liv­ing in Roanoke. She was pre­ceded in death by her parents, Harry and Gra­cie Sublett of Bed­ford, Vir­ginia; hus­band, Eu­gene M. Hoover; sis­ter, Mata Mae Sublett Ussery (War­ren) of Rich­mond, Vir­ginia; and brothers, Harry Sublett, Jr. (Pauline) of Roanoke, and Wil­liam “Billy” Sublett of West Vir­ginia.

She was a mem­ber of Im­manuel Bap­tist Church in Colo­nial Heights, Vir­ginia be­fore mov­ing to Roanoke, where they joined as mem­bers of Mel­rose Bap­tist Church. Max­ine and her hus­band moved to Roanoke from Peters­burg, Vir­ginia in 1999 to be near her fam­ily. They lived in an in­de­pen­dent apart­ment at Friend­ship Manor un­til Max­ine was moved to As­sisted Liv­ing soon af­ter the death of her hus­band in 2006. Max­ine re­tired from C&P Tele­phone Com­pany af­ter 42 years as a tele­phone op­er­a­tor and then as su­per­vi­sor.

She is sur­vived by her beloved brother, Jimmy F. Sublett (Fran) of Troutville, Vir­ginia; neph­ews, Stephen H. Sublett (Jeana) of Hous­ton, Texas and Brent Sublett (Deb) of Troutville; and also, an­other nephew and a niece.

A grave­side ser­vice will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tues­day, Novem­ber 27, 2018 at South­lawn Me­mo­rial Park, S. Prince Ge­orge, Vir­ginia. On­line con­do­lences may be reg­is­tered at ealvins­
