On Tuesday morning, November 27, 2018, God called our beloved brother, uncle and friend to come home. A good and faithful servant, Reverend Leroy Rhone obediently reached out to touch the Master’s hand and transitioned from his earthly place to be with the Lord.
Reverend Rhone is a native of Lunenburg and Brunswick counties. He was born in Lunenburg County to the late Deacon and Deaconess Robert Rhone of Meredithville, Virginia. On September 8, 1938, he accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Friendship Baptist Church in Kenbridge, Virginia. Later, his family moved to Brunswick County and united with the Union Church of Meredithville based on Christian experience. While at Union Church, he was further indoctrinated in Christian fellowship.
Reverend Rhone attended elementary and secondary public schools in Brunswick County. He continued his education at Virginia State University in Petersburg, John Tyler Community College and J. Sargent Reynolds Community College. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from the Richmond Virginia Seminary, and an associate’s degree in Church Administration from the Virginia Union University School of Theology.
He answered his call to the ministry in 1970. In 1971 he was licensed at the Lone Oak Baptist Church, Chase City,Virginia, and was elected as pastor of Lone Oak in 1982. He was later elected to Bethany Baptist Church in Kenbridge and the Union Baptist Church in Amelia, Virginia. He has been the pastor of the Union Baptist Church, Amelia, Virginia, for 36 years.
Reverend Rhone has held various positions in the past, such as Secretary of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Petersburg and Vicinity, Corresponding Secretary for the Baptist Conference, Blackstone, Virginia, Coordinator for the department of University Relations, and 2nd Moderator of the Ebenezer Association.
Reverend Rhone was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Robert and Deaconess Alice Rhone; two brothers, Robert Rhone Jr. and George L. Rhone; and one sister, Emily Moseley Jones.
Reverend Rhone leaves his legacy of love to be cherished by his four sisters, Alice Flannigan of Richmond, Virginia, Lena Rainey (Fred) of Arlington, Virginia, Julia Candia of Richmond, Virginia, and Joann Christian (Major) of Alberta, Virginia; one brother, James Rhone (Jackie) of Chesapeake, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A special thanks to our sister, Alice Flannigan for her dedication to our brother during his illness.
Homegoing service for Rev. Rhone will be held 12 p.m., Saturday, December 1, 2018, at Union Baptist Church, 3701 Namozine Rd., Church Road, VA., Reverend Warren Mays of Second Baptist Church Media, Pennsylvania, eulogist. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the Union Baptist Church Building Fund.
