Local teams take the field in first round of state playoffs tonight
HOPEWELL — Friday night at Merner Field, two fierce Tri-Cities rivals will collide. One is a defending state champion. The other is enjoying its winningest season since 2010.
The home team has been the dominant one when the two programs have met on the gridiron over the past eight years. But as 2016’s second-round playoff matchup proved, records can get tossed out the window when it comes to Hopewell and Petersburg going head-to-head.
The Hopewell Blue Devils (8-1) begin their 2017 state title defense this Friday, Nov. 9 versus a young and talented Petersburg Crimson Wave (7-3) at 7 p.m.
Hopewell Football receivers coach Carl Taylor works with team members on improving their results.
