Free breast exams, cervical screenings
PETERSBURG – Southside Regional Medical Center (SRMC) has partnered with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) as a patient care screening site for the Every Woman’s Life (EWL) program. Free breast exams and cervical screenings are available through this program for women with low-income who meet program requirements.
To be eligible, women must be
• Ages 40 - 64 in need of screening
• Ages 18 - 39 if symptomatic
• Resident of Virginia
• Meet income requirement
• Have no health insurance
Free services provided by the program include: Clinical breast exam, mammogram, pelvic exam, and pap test.
Women who are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer may also be eligible for Medicaid to pay for treatment. Most diagnostic tests related to abnormal findings are also free.
Early detection is essential for increasing successful treatment outcomes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer is the most common cause of death from cancer among Hispanic women and it’s the second most common cause of death from cancer among white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/ Alaska Native women.
