Free breast ex­ams, cer­vi­cal screen­ings

PETERS­BURG – South­side Re­gional Med­i­cal Cen­ter (SRMC) has part­nered with the Vir­ginia Depart­ment of Health (VDH) as a pa­tient care screen­ing site for the Ev­ery Woman’s Life (EWL) pro­gram. Free breast ex­ams and cer­vi­cal screen­ings are avail­able through this pro­gram for women with low-in­come who meet pro­gram re­quire­ments.

To be el­i­gi­ble, women must be

• Ages 40 - 64 in need of screen­ing

• Ages 18 - 39 if symp­to­matic

• Res­i­dent of Vir­ginia

• Meet in­come re­quire­ment

• Have no health in­sur­ance

Free ser­vices pro­vided by the pro­gram in­clude: Clin­i­cal breast exam, mam­mo­gram, pelvic exam, and pap test.

Women who are di­ag­nosed with breast or cer­vi­cal can­cer may also be el­i­gi­ble for Med­i­caid to pay for treat­ment. Most di­ag­nos­tic tests re­lated to ab­nor­mal find­ings are also free.

Early de­tec­tion is es­sen­tial for in­creas­ing suc­cess­ful treat­ment out­comes. Ac­cord­ing to the Cen­ters for Dis­ease Con­trol and Pre­ven­tion (CDC), breast can­cer is the most com­mon cause of death from can­cer among His­panic women and it’s the sec­ond most com­mon cause of death from can­cer among white, black, Asian/Pa­cific Is­lan­der, and Amer­i­can In­dian/ Alaska Na­tive women.

South­side Re­gional Med­i­cal Cen­ter (SRMC) is a 300-bed, acute-care fa­cil­ity lo­cated at 200 Med­i­cal Park Boule­vard in Peters­burg.
