CERT train­ing to be­gin Jan. 7

CH­ESTER­FIELD — Are you in­ter­ested in train­ing that will bet­ter pre­pare you for dis­as­ters and emer­gen­cies? Ch­ester­field County’s Com­mu­nity Emer­gency Re­sponse Team, or CERT, train­ing is sched­uled to be­gin Jan. 7.

The ini­tial train­ing course teaches ba­sic emer­gency re­sponse skills that are es­sen­tial in the crit­i­cal mo­ments af­ter a dis­as­ter, be­fore first re­spon­ders ar­rive. Classes are held each Mon­day and Wed­nes­day evening from 6-9:30 p.m. for four weeks. Top­ics in­clude light duty search and res­cue, fire safety and sup­pres­sion, ba­sic med­i­cal care, ter­ror­ism aware­ness, emer­gency com­mu­ni­ca­tions and dis­as­ter psy­chol­ogy. Grad­u­ates earn cer­tifi­cates and re­ceive CERT emer­gency gear.

There is no charge for the course, which is open to per­sons aged 18 and older who ap­ply. Space is lim­ited so en­roll early.
