CHESTERFIELD — Many Tri-City area residents and travelers have most likely noticed the tall American flag that now flies over I-95 in Chester.

The 40 foot by 76 foot American flag — which was put up by RJ Smith Materials and USA Metal Iron in honor of the military and first responders who go the extra mile — demands attention as it sits atop the state’s tallest flagpole at 212 feet.

Local Scouts from Packs 135 and 2819, Troops 184, 900, 2880, 2819 and Sea Scout Ship 169 attended the unveiling event and participated in all of the opportunities offered to the public. They were also able to visit with several hero organizations.

“They were just glad to be a part of the community,” said Scout mom Melissa Bartholomew. “Some of the Scouts were there to assist in any way they can. They also wanted to attend the historical event because of its importance not only in our lives, but in honoring heroes.

“It was a patriotic and civic opportunity. The Scout oath states ‘On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty to God and my Country,’” she added. “It was an opportunity for us to do our duties.”
