SRMC ex­pands ro­botic surgery pro­gram

PETERS­BURG — South­side Re­gional Med­i­cal Cen­ter, SRMC, ex­pands the Ro­botic Surgery pro­gram by wel­com­ing two new ro­botic sur­geons to the team of em­ployed doc­tors at South­side Physi­cians Net­work, SPN. Urol­o­gist Dr. Eu­gene Park (for­merly of Urol­ogy Spe­cial­ists of Vir­ginia) and ob­ste­tri­cian and gy­ne­col­o­gist Dr. Zvonko Spa­sic (for­merly of Do­min­ion Women’s Health) join bariatric sur­geon Dr. Te­jwant Datta as the new­est ro­botic sur­geons in Peters­burg and the Tri-Cities. Dr. Datta was the Tri-Cities first ro­botic sur­geon and has per­formed nearly 200 ro­botic pro­ce­dures in his time at SRMC. With this team of sur­geons, pa­tients in the Tri-Cities can now have ro­botic pro­ce­dures per­formed for nu­mer­ous con­di­tions such as uro­logic, gy­ne­co­logic, her­nia, gen­eral and bariatric. Ro­botic-as­sisted surgery may of­fer less pain, lower the risk of in­fec­tion, re­duce time in the hos­pi­tal and speed up re­cov­ery.

Eu­gene L. Park, M.D., is board cer­ti­fied with the Amer­i­can Board of Urol­ogy and pro­vides care to pa­tients in cen­tral Vir­ginia and the sur­round­ing area. Dr. Park spe­cial­izes in treat­ing dis­eases of the prostate, kid­ney, ureter, blad­der, adrenal gland and gen­i­tal area. He is skilled in min­i­mally in­va­sive surgery for be­nign and ma­lig­nant con­di­tions, kid­ney stone surgery, cys­toscopy, uri­nary en­doscopy, va­sec­tomy as well as med­i­cal man­age­ment of uro­logic con­di­tions. Dr. Park has ex­ten­sive ex­pe­ri­ence in ro­botic surgery and in 2017, he sur­passed 1,000 ro­botic surg­eries. Dr. Park will be see­ing pa­tients at two lo­ca­tions in Peters­burg and Ch­ester.

Zvonko Spa­sic, M.D., Board-cer­ti­fied OB/ GYN, joined South­side Physi­cians Net­work in 2019. He pur­sued his med­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion in Bos­nia and then es­tab­lished his ca­reer in women’s health in the Rich­mond area. As OB/ GYN Chief Res­i­dent at Vir­ginia Com­mon­wealth Univer­sity’s Med­i­cal Col­lege of Vir­ginia, he was awarded the es­teemed Wetch­ler Award for teach­ing and lead­er­ship. Dr. Spa­sic has ex­ten­sive ex­pe­ri­ence with ro­botic surgery, per­form­ing more than a 1,000 pro­ce­dures since 2007. In ad­di­tion, he was the first physi­cian on the East Coast to per­form a hys­terec­tomy us­ing a Rev­olex laser ro­botic sur­gi­cal sys­tem. He truly en­joys a chal­lenge and prob­lem solv­ing to help his pa­tients. Dr. Spa­sic works with high-risk preg­nan­cies to de­velop the best plan to en­sure the safety of mom and baby. Dr. Spa­sic will be see­ing pa­tients at two lo­ca­tions in Peters­burg and Prince Ge­orge.

Dr. Te­jwant Datta is board cer­ti­fied and is the di­rec­tor of Min­i­mally In­va­sive and Bariatric Surgery at South­side Re­gional Med­i­cal Cen­ter. In ad­di­tion to bariatric surgery, he brings a wide va­ri­ety of ad­vanced la­paro­scopic and en­do­scopic pro­ce­dures to his pa­tients. Dr. Datta has a spe­cial in­ter­est in com­plex her­nias (hi­atal, ven­tral, in­ci­sional), esophageal pro­ce­dures and in­testi­nal surgery. Dr. Datta per­forms ro­botic sleeve gas­trec­tomies and ro­botic lab band re­movals.

Also, new at SRMC is an up­graded sur­gi­cal ro­bot. This new ro­bot comes with im­proved video ca­pa­bil­i­ties in­clud­ing an im­mer­sive 3D-HD heads up dis­play, al­low­ing the sur­geons to see clearer. The new de­sign also gives more ac­cess to the sur­gi­cal site to in­crease ma­neu­ver­abil­ity and pre­ci­sion.
