Thursday’s recap

Charley Hoffman posted a bogey-free, 5-under 65 to take the first-round lead at the Charles Schwab Challenge on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. The 47year-old birdied two of his first three holes to get off to a strong start on a day when scoring chances were limited at Colonial Country Club. Hoffman’s round was enough for a one-shot advantage over five golfers tied for second. Brian Harman, Tony Finau, Davis Riley, South Korea’s S.H. Kim and Scotland’s Martin Laird opened with rounds of 4-under 66.

Playing in his first senior event of any kind, Englishman Richard Bland shared the 18-hole lead at a major championship. Bland, a member of LIV Golf, and Australian Richard Green were tied atop the leaderboard at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship after shooting 7-under 65s on Thursday at Harbor Shores Resort in Benton Harbor, Mich. The leaders held a two-shot edge over Steve Stricker, Scott Dunlap, Jeff Schmid, Canadian Mike Weir and South Korea’s K.J. Choi at 5-under 66. Bland joined LIV for its inaugural campaign in 2022, one year after he became the oldest player to win a DP World Tour event at 48. He told reporters on Thursday that he received a Senior PGA Championship invite “out of the blue” last year.

SOFTBALL

CCRI eliminated

The Community College of Rhode Island softball team came up short in the second of two losers’-bracket games on Thursday in Chattanooga, Tenn., and were eliminated in the 2024 NJCAA Division III World Series, ending its quest for a national championship. After losing its tournament opener on Wednesday to No. 3 seed SUNY Corning Community College, 3-2, the sixth-seeded Knights rebounded on Thursday afternoon with a 9-8 extra-inning win over No. 7 seed Herkimer. That set the stage for an evening showdown against No. 5 Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. Trailing by two runs with one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Cobras rallied for three runs — the final two coming with two outs — to escape with an 8-7 win. That ended CCRI’s championship hopes. CCRI closed out tournament play on Friday afternoon in the fifth-place game in a rematch against SUNY Corning.
