SWA discusses grant extension and legislatio­n

FALLS CREEK — The Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss a number of minor items. Director Donna Cooper asked the authority to approve an extension to a grant and informed the members of movement, or a lack thereof, on state and federal legislatio­n that could affect the authority.

Cooper asked the authority to approve a three-month extension to the 902 recycling grant that the authority originally received in 2018. The expiration date for the grant was originally put for the end of February of 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic and the changes brought with it forced the authority to delay some items.

Cooper said that the two remaining expenditur­es they would like to use the grant for are a demonstrat­ion of worm composting for the students of Brockway schools and a newsletter to the community. Cooper believed that a three-month extension would give them the time needed to complete these two projects and use the rest of the grant money. The authority approved the motion unanimousl­y.

The future of the upcoming applicatio­ns for 902 grants is currently up in the air, Cooper said. She said that she had not gotten confirmati­on if the authority will be able to apply for the grant next year or if the grant will be funded.
